Hello everybody! Ben and I have officially been in Rome for 3 days now! Our first day, we recovered from the long plane ride and lack of sleep and stayed in a Hostel where we met some other travellers from the US, Turkey, France, Chile, and Brazil.
By the way, the punctuation on this computer is different so if something is off...you know why!
Our first day of exploring we headed out to see what we could see. We visited the Colosseum, Basilica di San Pietro in Vincoli, and Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Colosseum is interesting to see from the inside. The Basilica di San Pietro houses a statue of Moses by Michaelangelo along with the chains that held St. Peter in prison in Jerusalem. Santa Maria Maggiore was interesting because mass was in process but tourists were still shuffling around in the back of the church, looking at art, and taking pictures. It seemed a little odd.
Today we visited the Vatican museums and the Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican. The Sistine Chapel was the highlight of the Vatican museums, which turns out to be a maze of rooms a hallways full of all kinds of art and sculpture. In the Basilica of St. Peter, they have tombs of past Popes, including Pope John Paul II. There are also tombs in the church, including Pius X, who is one display. His face is covered with a gold mask, but you can see his hand...which I personally find a bit odd to look at. Michaelangel's Pieta is also kept here. The church is MASSIVE and it is just filled with all kinds of paintings and sculptures.
Favorite quote of the trip so far:
"Do you want to go look at that old thing over there?" / Ben
Sorry there aren't any pictures, yet. I need to get the cord to try and upload them. Hopefully they will be coming soon. Anyhow, have to run for now!
Arrivederci!
