Guten tag!
Arrived in Berlin today. Before leaving Prague, we realized our Eurail passes weren´t valid in the Czech Republic, so we decided to escape quickly to our next destination...Poland. En route to Poland, we realized our passes werent valid there either! Long distance train travel is super expensive so our plan was to keep showing our passes and see what happened. Can you beleive we made it through the Czech Republic and Poland by continuing to show our invalid passes. Then, as soon as we got to Germany, where our passes are valid, we got on a "private" railway accidentally and got charged aka robbed. We had only one incident in Poland where we had to get off the train because the conductor was on to us. All that said, we made it.
Auschwitz was a somber experience, but we are glad we were able to go. Walking the grounds, it is still difficult to imagine the horror that took place there. The gas chamber and crematorium are still intact at Auschwitz I and you are able to walk through the area where so many lost their lives. Auschwitz II - Birkenau had 4 gas chambers and crematoria which could murder 2,000 people at one time. All of the chambers and crematoria were in ruins. One due to a revolt by the prisoners and the others because the Nazis tried to destroy the evidence of their crimes during the retreat. The cruelty is something our hearts will never understand.
After several days of train travel, we arrived in Berlin today. We were both run down by the crowded trains and sleeping in a tent, but rebounded after some bratwursts and sweets from a bakery.
Sorry, there are no pictures this time. We will update them when we arrive at Ben´s Aunt and Uncle´s home in 2-3 days.
Fun tidbit of the day: Saurkraut is even more delicious here. So is mustard.
