Monday
We woke up to a nice day breaking. Tha marina in Santa Cruz is huge and very clean and modern. Santa Cruz looks like any big city and looms up just beyond the marina with its highways, traffic, tall office buildings and a huge clamshell concert hall on the water front.
It was a beautiful day, but not for sailing. We had to motor most of the way over to Las Palmas which was about 55 miles and took well into the evening.
Olag sprung a man overboard drill on me by throwing the spar bouy overboard and saying with his Russian accent "OK, Scieper, you have a man overboard, what you going to do now."
I was already doing it before he finished his sentence. I starting a figure 8 turn while telling someone to keep pointing at the MOB and someone else to get on the VHF. It was a piece of cake with the sails down and the engine already on.
During the rest of the trip, Olag taught us what he could, but we spent a lot of time just soaking up the sun.
