Canada's World Tour
hello. had quite an evntful ride into cambodia. got up for half five departure, and after a four and a half hour trip to the border, went through, no problems. about half an hour after we meet our mini bus on the cambodian side, it breaks down. we sit at the side of the road in the hotness for a few hours while our driver tinkers with something under the van. he fixes it and we head off only to get a flat an hour down the road. another fourty minutes whilst that is fixed and then we head off for the second time. a half hour later the driver decides we need to stop in a tiny town to rotate the wheels. and hour later, it is six, the time we thought we would be arriving in siem riep, and we are heading onwards for the third time, still a good few hours away. oh yeah, the road it like the surface of the moon and we are all getting thrown around like rag dolls. and the roof is half hanging off inside the van.
so we finally get to siem riep at about nine in the evening and we are about two minutes from our hotel when we get pulled over by police looking for a bribe. after nearly getting the van impounded we get to the hotel and go have dinner. traditional khmer. very good i might add.
so after our crazy journey here we got up early today to go see the sunrise over Angkor Wat. we had a bit of cloud and it wasnt as spectacular as i had imagined but still awesome none the less. after the sunrise we had a look round the thing itself, amazing architecture and carvings and some VERY steep steps. we had a good look round there and then headed off to the temple where some of tomb raider had been filmed, this was crazy good also as this one was slowly being lost to the jungle surrounding it, walls held together by tree roots and the like.
the final temple of the day was Angkor Thom. extremely cool huge heads carved into the 54 huge stone towers held therein. and yes, i got a few pictures of them for you mum, even one or two with me in them. the final stop of the day was the land mine museum, startling facts and figures, explanations of how landmines worked and were planted and stories of some of the children affected by them. 2-3 people die everyday in cambodia alone through landmines left over from the wars. the kids there, who were all victims of landmines were so upbeat about what had happened to them it was hard even to notice any limbs that were not there, all i could see was happy, smiling children laughing and messing around with the tourists that had come to see the museum.
tomorrow is a free day, there is an opertunity to go see some more temples but after two very early starts and a whole day of temples i think everyone is just going to sleep in and look round the city. so until next time, good night and may buddha watch over you.
