Martil:
We drove in loose convoy down the Mediterranean Coast to our first campsite in Morocco.
We certainly know we are back in Africa! The camp was very reminiscent of many, many campsites we suffered especially in Northern Africa on our last big trip here. Dusty and dirty, broken-down practically everything, dodgy electricity supply. Only one shower out of ten had hot water AND a shoer rose - all the others had one tap and just a pipe out of the wall. The gas hot water heater on the wall next to the shower was an OH and S nightmare: scorch marked were emblazoned across the casing from the pilot light, a decaying rubber hose with duct tape in spots led down to a rusty gas cylinder resting not a metre from the wet floor. Naturally the toilets were holes in the floor with footpads. The cistern was there but unconnected and a bucket and a tap thoughtfully provided in each cubicle.
Some of us wandered down to the promenade and we walked together along the beach. Turning back through town, we lost the others as we ducked into a pastry shop - the window display was too good to pass up. We bought 5 small pastries and was shocked when the young girl put the price up on the calculator - 500 Dirhams (about €50) which is a bit pricey for a cheap country - or indeed in any country. After she realised why we were looking odd, she made it clear that it was 5 Dh - we couldn't see the decimal point! Now 5 Dh is about 50 eurocents - about 65 cents - for 5 pastries! And very delicious they were too.
