Well it has been a very long day but well worth the early start because it has been wonderful! I woke up at 3:30am and Andrew not too long afterwards because we had booked a taxi for 4:30 to take us to Luton Airport. Although we were pretty much sorted I wanted to make sure we had everything we needed and was also super excited about what was to lie ahead. We were not only going to Berlin but we were seeing Mum and John after many months! YAY! I have been looking forward to this for quite some time and the day had finally arrived so I was buzzing!
We arrived at Luton Airport at about 5:15 so we were pretty early but it was better to be safe than sorry and there was quite a big queue to get through security so if it had been any worse we potentially could have been in trouble. We then had to wait until 6:30 when our departure gate was announced so we grabbed some breakfast to have on the plane and killed a bit of time before we proceeded to the gate. Once again we had to queue up but before too long we were on the plane on our way to Germany. Andrew was sick of me reminding him that I'd be seeing Mum and John soon so I had to try and contain my excitement during the flight and when we arrived. The flight was about 1 hour 40 mins so we landed in Berlin at about 10:20am having lost an hour due to time difference.
As soon as we walked outside we knew we were in another Country! The look, the feeling, the people, the language and golly was it cold! I mean we knew it was going to be colder than London at this time of the year but we didn't expect such a dramatic difference. My hands went blue instantly so out came the gloves straight away!
Andrew had done his homework about the train we needed to get so we grabbed a three day travel pass and made our way to the platform. It was very easy and we had beautiful scenery on the train with frosted landscapes and interesting little suburbs to view. It was a fairly long train trip but I was so fascinated by everything the time seemed to fly by and before we knew it we were at Griefswalder Station, near our accommodation. We then had a short walk to the apartment that Mum and John had booked. They hadn't arrived in Berlin yet so we were shown up to the apartment (WOW!), given the keys and waited for them to arrive. It was probably only half an hour before we got a text that they were outside so we raced down to meet them and it was massive hugs all around!
We popped back up to the apartment and had a great catch up before heading out to have some lunch and do some sight seeing. We caught the tram into the city centre and we came across a lovely warm and inviting Mexican restaurant which was absolutely delicious! The boys even kicked off the weekend with a Margarita! It was just perfect and definitely filled our hungry stomachs that hadn't seen any food since early hours of the morning.
Mum and John had been told about double decker buses that are ideal for tourists because they pass and stop at all the main attractions so we decided to try and hop on one. We ended up having quite a funny episode because I saw one in the distance and we literally all sprinted so that we didn't miss it. This warmed us up a bit and definitely got the hearts racing! So this was a neat idea because we now have a general understanding of the layout of the city and we know where we want to return to tomorrow.
We were all starting to feel really quite exhausted on the way back to the apartment so we decided a night in and an early night was on the cards. So we grabbed some wine, nibbles and some breakfast bits for the morning and had a lovely evening chatting, catching up on a bit of news and Mum even got quite excited about playing Fruit Ninja on my iPad. Hehe!
All in all we have had a fabulous first day in Berlin and can't wait to get up early tomorrow and explore this unique city. I am now the last to go to sleep and I'm sure as soon as my head hits the pillow I'll be dead to the world. Gute Nacht!
Photos will be posted when we return to London and there will be plenty for sure! The current cover photo for this blog is the apartment block we are staying in and was just taken from my iPhone so is not great quality! I'll update this later too!
