DAY 5: WATERFALLS, RAINBOWS AND FLYOVERS
Today we took in a fair bit of what the Falls have to offer. Over about 5-6 hours we did a tour that included a few of the main attractions in and around the area.
I've been taking photos pretty much non-stop since we arrived here, but I think I've been wasting my time. The force, sound and volume of water that passes over the Falls just can't be captured in 2D. It's simply breathtaking.
Today we've been behind, next to and under the Falls - and got just a little wet in the process!
The boat cruise was a highlight - and we had prime position front and centre of the bow. No chance for any Titanic 'king of the world' impressions here. What has looked like a cloud of mist from our hotel room hits you like a thunderstorm when you get about 100m from the base of the Horseshoe Falls. At about 50m from the face, you're struggling to hear or see anything, except maybe the boat's engines go into overdrive just to hold the vessel steady against the raging current.
When the skipper gave in and turned around to head back, the downpour cleared to present a huge rainbow right in front of us. It was the signal for everyone to frantically wipe dry their iPhones and start selfie-snapping like crazy!
To top it off, there was this squadron of aerobatic stunt pilots flying over us, making numerous passes over the Falls in various close formations the whole time. I don't think Josh knew where to look first.
Definitely a day that'll be hard to top.
I'm sure our next stop tomorrow though (New York) will give it a nudge!
