We arrived here in Ronne on the sunny island of Bornholm yesterday evening after. 13 hour sail from Klintholm. Ronne is the capital of the island. Bornholm has its own language known as old east Danish or half Swedish it also has its own climate giving cool springs and warm Indian summers. It's famous for its round churches and the Hammershus castle, the largest medieval ruined castle in Northern Europe. There are 14/15 yacht harbours on the island this is now the 3rd one we have stayed in, we decided to stay for a few days and rent a car to tour the whole island. We have heard of sailors who have spent an entire summer sailing round this island. On returning to the boat tonight we were surprised to see Humble Bee a Halburg Rassy yacht that we have met up with before, it was good to catch up with Paul and Egular again and a surprise to find out that there plans are almost identical to ours again, so the Bees are sailing together again. Today's road trip was round the northern part of the island, taking in 3 round churches climbing up into the roof of one via a very steep stair inside a 2 m thick wall, theses churches are over 900 years old. We also hiked to Denmark's third highest waterfall which is considerably prettier than its name Pissebækken (the piss brook). Day 2 of our road trip brings us rain, heavy all day rain, luckily we have seen most of the island. We set off down to the south past really long runway that is the Islands airport then to Arnager where Northern Europe's longest wooden bridge is, not sure about this!!! From here we visit the last round church on the island, then stopped off for a coffee at Elkodalen ( echo valley ) with impressive cliff walks, to wet to go far unfortunately, this is also the highest point on the island we climbed up to the top of a large viewing tower, to see rain and mist. Then down to the very south to walk in the sand dunes. Sand like a south sea island so the guide book says, sand so fine they use it for hour glasses, but today it was more like I remember the beach at Redcar in Yorkshire when I was little, wet and blowing. Our road trip over, we now can plan sailing north but unfortunately we are in for a few days of unsettled weather. We have a crossing to Sweden to make across the Hanö Bucht about 70nm known locally as the Swedish bay of Biscay. The forecast is for a dry day but quite windy. If we can get across the we will be in more sheltered sailing areas.
