I finally put my procrastination aside and finished (well very nearly) packing for my trip which is 2 DAYS AWAY!! Ever the great writer of lists, I once again compiled a huge bullet-pointed, A4 sheet of paper to make sure that everything I need actually made it into my bags. I'm praying that all my anti-malarials, contact lenses, etc make it over with me to Borneo and don't spontaneously combust on the trip over which, knowing my luck, will probably happen (*haha).
Vacuum packing all my clothes was really entertaining and rather satisfying too. How, what seems like copious piles of clothing, can be vacuumed into a compact 50x70cm bag (which too decreases in size), baffles me. Tip to travellers: these extremely cheap contraptions are life-savers (*note to self: don't be tricked into packing more, everything still weighs the same). Having inherited the desire to over-pack from my Grandmother "travel-packing" is challenging to say the least. I am also the type of person who thinks of every single possible scenario that could happen, and will try to pack for each of those too (*sigh).
Whilst I've cut down on the clothing and beauty side of packing, never have I had to take so many toiletries before. I kid you not my rucksack is genuinely half-full of all my cleaning bits&bobs, "necessary" tablets, jungle spray, and a fully functioning surgeon's kit. I pretty sure the "sterile first aid kit" I purchased from Amazon shouldn't be sold to the general public. Nevertheless, I feel fully prepared for whatever Borneo is willing to throw at me (*minus the mosquitoes and bugs, you can buzz right off).
There is of course the novelty of packing for Borneo. Before this trip I hadn't heard of "Leech Socks" before and neither it seems had the UKs biggest travelling/walking/hiking (you get the picture) shops (*worryingly so). I was pretty sure these things were fictitious; but I finally found some. Electric-blue and unflattering (not fantastic for fashion-conscious me, but hey-ho*). I also have to take with me my mosquito net, a hanging system (just in case), travel adaptors and many other "entirely-necessary" things.
It's taken a while, or maybe that was just the zipping of my rucksack (*oops), to get everything packed and I'm finally feeling a little more relaxed. I guess this is the last post I'll do in England, which to me seems crazy. Speak to you from the other side of the world (AAAAAH!!). I'll keep you posted :)
Love,
Jordanna xx
