Well hello there! Dialu-alukan!!!! A very warm (blisteringly hot*) welcome to my travelling adventure. Whilst England is blanketed by the frozen blurr of snow, Malaysia is host to a cool 30°C. Needless to say, I know where I'd rather be. Well luckily, in 20 days time, after a lot of undoubtedly restless travelling I'll be bumbling through the Bornean jungle; breathing in the faint aroma of humidity and playing (yes actually hands-on working) with the fuzzy-orange, exceptionally adorable Borneon Orang-utans at Sepilok's Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre.
If you're reading this, you're probably all-knowing about what I'm doing in the forthcoming couple of months, but for those of you who don't and have had the *ahem* fortune to stumble upon my blathering then here's a snippet of what I'm doing throughout March and April:
Having been an avid lover of Orang-utans since I first saw them on a BBC documentary back in the smalls of my childhood I have always had a desire to work with them hands on: to save them and their surrounding habitat from the tragedy of human ignorance. A simple Google search to see whether this was possible set the ball rolling. Quickly I got in contact with the company "Travellers Worldwide" to see whether they had any available spaces over the next year. To my surprise there was a cancellation for a March-April 2013 8 week volunteering space working with Orang-Utans. I jumped at the chance, and very quickly everything was booked.
If you want to have a read of the things I'll be doing out on the project; feel free to have a read here: http://www.travellersworldwide.com/11-malaysia/11-malaysia-orangutans.htm. The diversity of the roles I will be undertaking is amazing and the opportunity is simply once in a lifetime; to make a difference will be a huge achievement and I cannot wait to get out there! I'll keep posting to let you know what I've been up to week to week.
My journey begins here, and I hope to share that with you along the way. I've only had 2 months to get everything (and I mean everything *oh the woes of vaccinations*) ready which has been pretty hectic but I'm sure it will be well worth it when I'm out there. I'm extremely excited and nervous (first time properly away from home and all o' that!) but I'll embrace every ounce of the experience I can out there.
Packing will most probably be my next post (God help me); the imminent struggles I'll have to get everything into my worryingly small backpack will most likely be both stressful and humorous.
Thank you for reading; I'll keep you posted!
