Due to limited travel from Vientiane to Bangkok, I've arrived back in Thailand's capital with 24 hours to spare before my extremely early flight on Tuesday morning. Had the most AMAZING bus down, my best by far - an overnight one. I think it was tailored as a VIP bus for the Thais, which is really the evuivalent of first class travel for us... cost $20 from Vientiane across the border and all the way here (15hours!), there were 3 seats to a row, not 4, really wide, loads of leg room, amazing aircon, and they handed out snacks and drinks! It was half empty! We get very excited about nice buses out here. It is really quite a treat.
Bangkok feels so much easier having traveled for 3 weeks - you clearly gain so much confidence. Very interesting self-assessing! Taking chaotic local buses, linking together with the sky train, no problem at all... compared to before, when I was too nervous to use anything but a tuk tuk or taxi!! Had a great day here, I feel like I've 'discovered' bangkok. Went to siam square, very young, cool and not so try hard - just full of Thai students after school! - found a much more cultured area and a beautiful park, Lamphini. Because it was originally my first traveling destination I think I didn't get part the khao san road area with tourists everywhere, but all the westerners I saw today looked like they live or work there.
Currently sitting in the airport at 4am on Tuesday, waiting to catch my flight in 2 hours. Because the city transport shuts from about 11pm until 6am, the only option if you have an early flight is to get there the night before and kip at the airport on a small hard seat, which has been grim, especially considering the night before was on a bus. I reckon I've had a combined total of 5 hours sleep over the lsat 2 days. I had to buy myself a snickers just to cheer myself up. It didn't work. Will be in Hong Kong soon though - with a recognisable family format, a bed, a hot water shower, and an aircon. Things seem good.
