So now, I'm back up to date with the blog, and writing in the present. If you didn't see my post (location was Pai, Northern Thailand), I basically explained that I've just recently filled in the last month of the trip using facebook messages sent to the family, and a bit of memory - seemed the easiest way to do it - so if you haven't seen them go back and have a look - the one from Pai is the first catch up one!
Had a lovely couple of days here in Singapore, and I've found it a really interesting place, although it has made me feel EXTREMELY poor - it is on a whole new level from the rest of South East Asia, even Hong Kong. "What is this?? $5 for a meal, and $15 for a dorm bed?? What is this mockery?!"
Despite that, it's a fun place. I've loved the architecture and the way the city is laid out and built up. It is so clean, almost obsessively, and very stylish in it's straight-line layout. Personally, I think it has enough character as a city, although lots of people I've talked do disagree! Everyone is very helpful, there are signs everywhere forbidding 'jaywalking', spitting, chewing gum or littering. Consequently, it does sometimes feel as though it crosses over into Big Brother 1984 territory, especially with the overwhelming number of security cameras. Sometimes it feels like everyone is just a liiiiittle scared to break the system...
Highlight have been some of the places I've found whilst exploring. A university built entirely underground in the heart of the city, Old Parliament Building, New Supreme Court, which was the most incredible place - I wasn't allowed to take pictures! - and an arts house which screens loads of free literary talks, films, and live theatre, although unfortunately none of which coincide with my time!
So this evening I catch a flight to Indonesia, and I become a proper traveller again, which I'm looking forward to. Having had some time traveling alone, which I loved, I'm now going to meet up with my old friend Tom, and we've got a month to go around Indonesia, which should be great fun. Mum is worried about the pirates, which she fears are in abundance in that specific part of the world. I have purchased a cutlass so I can meet them on their own terms.
I'm leaving Indonesia on the 10th July and heading into Malaysian Borneo, up in the North. I've then got 3 weeks to split as I like between that section and mainland Malaysia, before catching my flight home (!) on the 31th July, exactly 20 weeks after I left England. Wow, suddenly 7 weeks or so left doesn't feel like quite so much! Who knows how well I will keep the blog up to date. Fingers crossed, we'll see...
