Got lost today. Like really lost. I tried to go to a few places in the french consession area, but the taxi driver had no clue where to go. None what so ever. Finally he just told me to get out (I assume thats what he said cause he just pulled over and said something while pointing to the door). Luckily it was a very nice area to be lost in. It kinda reminded me of new york actually. Lots of trees lining the streets and so on. So I started walking hoping to get myself oriented so I could find the places I went down there to see. Well, streets here do not keep the same name for its length. It changes two or three times, sometimes changing back, sometimes not. Also different areas have the same street names, but on the sign it is all the same. For example Fuxing Lu (fuxing street) is listed as fuxing donglu, fuxing xilu and fuxing zhonglu. Now if you know where you are, or speak enough madrine to know what the heck the second word means it would probibly not be a problem. I on the other hand just got booted out of a taxi and had no idea what area I was even in. What that meant is I had to walk quite far to even have the slightest idea where I was.
After about half an hour of this I found where I think I was, but had no idea which direction I was facing. Murphy's law ensured that the sun was behind clouds the whole time I was lost. So more walking and slowly getting an idea of what direction I was heading and then the streets switched names and I was lost again. It took about 3 hours and god know how many blocks but I finally found my "jumping off point" of the day, Sun Yetsans former residence.
All the walking and getting lost and found so many times makes a girl hungry, so I set off again to find some lunch. There were a few resturaunts, but while wandering down an ally I found about 50 workers from the area eating wicked looking food. So while all 50 of them stared and laughed, I ordered some food. Rice, some kind of vegi, and some kind of fish looking thing. There were only about 3 tables and I really didnt want to draw more attention to myself (if I could, anyone who didnt see more order food was quickly alerted to the tall blonde chick) by squatting down in front of all these boxes scattered in the ally to serve as a table and thankfully someone pushed over so I could sit at one of the tables. The food was super tasty and everyone had a wonderful time laughing at me. Frankly I didnt care. my lunch cost less than a buck and it was really freaking good.
Since they all got their entertainment for the day, the least they could do was point me in the direction of the flower market. So, pulling out my wicked 10 word vocabulary they got me going in the right direction yelling jokes at me as I exited the alley.
My feet had had enough of the french consession so I hailed a cab and headed back to the apartment. Everyone should be home in a few hours and mrs. chen the house keeper has cooked an amazing looking meal for supper.
Oh yeah, on the cab home drove by the Shanghai world finance center. I've seen it from far away, but today we were right beside it. Its one of the tallest buildings in the world. When finished it will be 101 stories and over 1600 feet. There is a big battle between Korea (1900 feet) Dubai (they wont even say, probibly 1905 feet) and Russia (2100 feet, but its not started yet I dont think) for worlds tallest, but for a while the one is Shanghai was it. There is one right beside it too, the xujaihui tower which is 1509 feet. From far away its pretty neat, sitting under it is something eles all together. It's stupidly tall.
