After the heavy rainfall from last night and the extra companion in our room we didnt have much sleep. We woke up at 06.30am to get ready for the day ahead. We were going to the Kinabatang river and rainforest to see the wildlife, the journey was long and very bumpy, the roads are not very smooth in Borneo! We arrived at a small jetty and had to basically walk the plank with our heavy rucksacks on our backs to get across to the platform on the river and by the way... there are crocs in this river, we were dreading a fall! we got into a small, very uneven boat which was likely to capsive if you made a sudden movement to one side of the boat and journeyed along the river for around 20 minutues until we arrived at our accomodation. It was a lodge in the middle of the jungle!! !! A walkway bridge went through the trees taking you to an open aired dining room, no walls but a roof to keep you dry, we were in the heart of the jungle and we knew it because we looked up to see an orangutan climbing from tree to tree, ocasionally throwing sticks at us as if to say go away and stop taking pictures of me! I cant believe we saw a wild orangutan, they are now an endangered species in Borneo due to deforestation and people keeping them as illegal pets. We then had dinner and had a talk with our guide about how to remove a snake safely should one land on you and decided to wrap itself around you! That was a little bit scary, we also saw a croc in the river. The river in Borneo if freshwater however the crocs are saltwater, it was found that the last 5 meteres at the bottom of the riuver were saltwater explaining why they are here.
We went back onto the boats for a wild life tour, we say a vast amount of monkeys, some babies which was really cute, many hornbill birds which are only native in Borneo, a kingfisher, humungous lizard and a jungle pig! im not so sure on the real name for it tho and mum before you think your very funny the name of this jungle pig is not called Bronya nor Katie!
We were meant to go on a night time boat trip to see more wildlife but them KABOOOMMM! thunder lightening and very, very heavy rain. Now i know why they call it a rain forest! We settled to bed at 11.30ish and heard a huge THUD, there were monkeys on our bedroom roof, we could here there little footsteps and them jumping around, thank god we didnt leave our clothes on the balcony!
