My trip to Flores from Antigua was interesting. I first caught a shuttle (mini bus) from Antigua to Guatemala City. It was full of tourists and locals. The driver was a maniac driver. I think his hero is Michael Schumacher. Anyway I arrived in the city in one piece and then waited at a bus terminal for 2 hours before my bus left. I boarded the bus and got my assigned seat. We had just got out of the city when the bus stops and a guys gets on. The co-driver walks to the back of the bus and puts a little stool in the aisle and the new passenger sits down next to me. This is a first class bus. One where you pay extra so that you can travel in comfort! Anyway an hour down the rode I open my eyes and the bus driver is riding on the wrong side of the road passing a huge traffic jam of cars & trucks. Every now and then a car or truck comes from the front and he pulls onto the shoulder of the rode on the wrong side of the rode to let the car/truck pass between him and the other traffic. He keeps doing this for the next 1.5 hours. At some points on the road the co-driver must hop out of the bus and move traffic cones to let oncoming traffic through. I guess it was good otherwise I might still be on the bus. He kept to the schedule. Mad I say mad. Oh and at one point he came to a screeching halt and almost collided with a truck in front of us. I decided to close my eyes and hope for the best. Then just when I thought that was it, he stopped and picked up 8 more people and they simply just all squashed in near the back in the aisle. Amazing!! Well I got here ok and then managed to get a taxi across to the island of Flores. I'm staying at a B&B and sharing a room with about 8 others. Its quite cool though. Am off for a sunrise at Tikal (Mayan ruins) tomorrow. Its a 4am pickup. Am getting used to these early starts now.
Lets hope the bus ride to Belize City is less eventful. Will keep you posted.
