So the fair was a week ago... And of course A LOT has happened since then so I'm going to try and sum it up for you quick.
On Friday Ryan had to work so I hung out with some floor mates and Yoyo. We went to dinner and saw a hypnotist. It was the first time I had ever seen a hypnotist so that was sue or neat. It was Tom DeLuca who is famous for his ability to hypnotize people. He asked for about 15 volunteers from the audience and he did his thing (whispering, talking, touching) and within 20 minutes they were asleep! Some of them either didn't take it well or were faking so if he knew that he asked them to leave. So it ended up with about 10 people left. He would say commands and all 10 people would do the same thing. He also picked certain people out to do things and it was hilarious. He made one kid be "the Mizzou's top
Cheerleader" and whenever he said the world Mizzou the kid would jump up out of his chair and started chanting and cheering and jumping up and down. It was super funny. If you ever get the chance to go see a hypnotist-do it!
I also attended a campus pep and spirt rally inside the rec center. That was fun, they had BBQ and hot dogs for us and the athletic director talked as well as the football coach and both men's and women's basketball coaches. We sang the fight song (which I'm still learning) and some other cheers and sings (also still learning) and the dancers and cheerleaders performed. That was fun.
Saturday morning I got up early and did some volunteering at a local organization here in Columbia. The residence halls asked first year students to do some volunteering as part of a way to start the school year off right. You were in groups of people and they bussed you to where toy had to go and brought you back. There were over 500 kids that volunteered all throughout Columbia that morning. I was in a group with 6 other girls and we went to a local organization that helps struggling families with diapers or formula or helps families adopt kids.
We got back about 12:30 and I grabbed lunch with a friend of mine.
Sunday morning Ryan and I went to an all you can eat brunch at one of our favorite restaurants. Ryan normally has to work on Sunday's but this last weekend he didn't and the brunch is over offered on Sunday's so we decided to check it out. It was amazing. All you can eat eggs, bacon, cinnamon rolls, fruit, biscuits and gravy, made to order omelets, chicken wings, mashed potatoes.
Afterwards we walked around downtown a little bit and went to a couple shops. Sunday evening I went to a transfer student reception. They gave us cookies, a free t shirt and talked to us about getting involved in campus. When I checked into the reception I made a name tag and the girl next to me happened to making one too and we both looked over and we had both wrote the name Brittany. So we chatted and ended up sitting down together and really hitting it off. After the reception we went to the "Tiger Walk", I went with Brittany.
The tiger walk is a traditional here at Mizzou were incoming students walk through the "famous" columns towards the center of campus as a sign of them going in to university. As a senior you do the opposite and you walk towards downtown as a symbol of going into the big kid world. Afterwards they give you ice cream that has black and gold tiger stripes in it. Brittany's family happened to be there so I met them and they were really friendly and they took a few pictures of us. (I'll post them as well).
Monday's classes went well. I had three of them but I don't start until 1pm. I slept in, grabbed breakfast and did a little prep work before heading off to class. Monday I grabbed lunch with Ryan and Brittany (we found out that they have the same class together too). Then I went to biology, which has 434 kids in it! My next class is math which only has about 30 kids in it and then my health sciences class which has about 100 kids in it. On Tuesdays and Thursday's I only have one class and it's from 12:30-1:45. It's a psychology class that has about 400 kids in it as well. So far the size doesn't overwhelm me, I think it'll be fine.
Yesterday I was supposed to have class at 9am. I got up and got ready all to go to the classroom and see a sign saying that we don't have class... Why he couldn't have just emailed us is beyond me. So I had some time to kill before my next class at 1pm so I walked around campus and stumbled upon a business fair. Local businesses were handing out coupons and samples of products. I grabbed a bunch of free things: cookie, half of a sandwich, two more t shirts, face wash, two pairs of sunglasses, note pad, bunch of plastic cups and $10 bath and body gift card. Needless to say, I got my money's worth.
Last night, Wednesday night, I went to an improv comedy show that is put on by students. It's 6 students who perform for about an hour. They mimic the show "who's line is it anyway" and it's very funny. They do little snippets of games and they are all very funny.
Today I don't have class until 12:30 so I'm just hanging out until then. This afternoon I'm going to a part time job fair and hopefully something will work out for me and I'll find a job. At 6pm I'm going to a training session for the students who are in the elite cheering section, called Tigers Lair, for the football games.
I'll probably play some sand volleyball after my homework is finished.
Love you! Britt
