Yo Yo Yo!
Right, firstly, this is going to be a VERY short blog entry, but just enough so you know where the hell we have been the last 2 months!
Basically we left Mexico just after New Year in the first week of Jan where we made our way to Ecudor in South America. Partly due to the theft of Holly's handbag, but also due to the lack of redeeming features it had, we weren't massive fans of Ecuador. We decided to get out and down to Peru which we heard was lovely and where we also had to aclimatise for the Inca, so we started a long few bus journeys down the west cost from Quito in Ecuador to Cusco Peru. In total it took about 4 days on buses, stopping once in a hostel because we had to shower and sleep in a real bed for fear of developing 'chair back'.
We arrived in Cusco on the 12th (ish) of Jan and absolutely fell in love with the place. We used the days to get used to the new air (which is so hard at first that brusing your teeth makes you out of breath..) and to stock up on alpaca clothes for the Inca Trail. We did the Inca Trail from the 15 - 19th of Jan and I can honestly say it was one of the best things I have ever done. In our group of 12 people, we were with a lovely couple from Manchester, 5 Australians and 3 Americans, plus me and Holly. The four days absolutely knackered us and Holly developed quite bad altitude sickness which made it even harder for her.
After that we were quite close with the Australians so we decided to go back down to Cusco for 2 days before heading down to Bolivia by bus (which is about 18 hours direct). We had a few problems with this as the buses in Cusco had decided to so on strike and so it was hit and miss as to whether we would be able to leave, but thankfully we got out and down to Bolivia along with the Aussies. On arrival in La Paz we booked into our hostel and found an agent who would take all 7 of us to do the notorious 'death roád' in Bolivia. Death Road was shut a few years back because there were the highest number of road traffic deaths of any other road, so it was closed to public transport and instead you can opt to ride down it on a mountain bike..! Yippeee!!! So we got geared up and did the trip the next day. 68km downhill over 5 hours...fantastic fun. Poor Holly got a little brave and decided that death road wasn't dangerous enough, so she waited till we cornered the mountain before applying full pressure to the front brake and flying about 3 metres into the air. Good girl. She had a fantastic scab and some great pictures. Thankfully she was fine... :)
Then we went down to Uyuni where we did a 3 days tour of the salt flats, again with the Aussies, which was good fun. We got to sleep in a salt hotel and see lots of cool stuff. After this, we both developed a spot of food poisening (apparently it's pretty common in Bolivia), and because we were feeling a little sorry for ourselves we wanted to go back to Cusco, Peru where we felt really at home. We headed back to Cusco via Lake titicaca which was really pretty and had a lovely little village nearby (Copacobana).
So then we headed to Cusco and had 6 nights back at The Point hostel where we met some lovely guys, Terry, Jess, Gervase and Dave who we spent most of our time with.
From there we had the nightmare 4 day flying frenzy which I am certain you have all heard about by now, but basically resulted in me running down the aisle of a plane shouting "I need to get off this flight!!" after realising Holly and I had been booked onto the wrong airplane.. Hmmm... But after 40 hours in Panama City Airport all was resolved beautifully and that brings us to our current destination - SALVADOR BAHIA, BRASIL!!
We have been here for a week and been enjoying all carnival has to offer. Dancing, late nights, delicious street food and more samba than you thought possible. It's bloody great here and we will be staying a while yet, before heading down to Rio de Janiero on the 22nd ish to meet up with some friends.
But for now, check out our (JOKE POSING - BY THE WAY) photos of Holly and I being excellent housewives in the new flat we've been living in for the last week.
Loads of love to you all...
