Fighting to get over being homesick
Not going to lie...i was really sad the week leading up to my birthday. I tried to snap out of it and failed. On the friday before my birthday Mike texts me and says "we are going out for dinner tonight...i feel bad that your sad in NZ" bless him. That kind of made me think "man up!!!"
Anyway.....the boys pick me up from work at 6 with wine and pastry in the back of the car. The table was booked for 7:30 so we went for a coffee first. At about 7:45ish the boys said we'd drop the stuff off at Emilies then go to the resturant. We arrived...I waited in the car with Sam. 5 mins later the boys came out and said "a very excited Emily wants to say hello". I went in to say hello and..there behold was Mikes crew stood around a BBQ with "Happy Birthday Banners" etc etc etc. I totally didnt see it coming....and felt a witch for being so miserbale all week. A lovley thought...very sweet.
The Saturday night was Mikes friends bday. Jack travelled down from the north island to spend my birthday with me. We arrived at the party wrecked....then played drinking games. The boys were drinking beer i was drinking wine. It was obviously going to end in tears. I was very very sick (apparently) then got upset because i was sick. What a mess.....the boys throw me a BBQ for my birthday i respond by getting hideously drunk and playing up!! Needless to say....I wont be drinking for acouple of months.
On the Sunday Jack and i left at stupid o'clock in the morning to catch the bus from Christchurch to Queenstown. We passed Lake Tekapo and Mount Cook, the scenery was beautiful. I was having a text convo with Mike about my drunken antics the night before....put my phone down next to me and fell asleep. Phone was gone when i woke up.....very annoying!!!!!
Arriving in Queenstown we checked in Nomads hostel that work had sorted out a deal with for me and Jack. Nomads is a really snazzy hostel (comparing this to South America as ive been with friends since arriving in NZ).
The day we arrived was my actaul birthday so at least acouple of drinks were on the cards. I was chatting to Aussie guys... I said that we were here to do bungies etc and i also wanted to get down to Milford Sounds. They said they were going the next day and we were welcome to go with them as they had room the car. I LOVE TRAVELLING!! We planned not to have a big night...then we won a bar tab of $60...no chance of an early night now. Basically you had a mug s*** taken, at 11pm they would put all the pictures on a fast slideshow and randomly stop it. It stopped on Andrew...teapots galore!!
The following morning feeling a tad fragile we began out road trip to Milford Sounds. The scenery was spectacular...it raine dfor 2 days before so milford was like one huge waterfall. We saw glaciers on the way Milford, once on the boat we saw loads of seals. They fight for the highest point on the rock...cute watching them bicker!! Later on the cruise we saw dolphins. Dolphins arnt seen very often in Milford so we were lucky. I have never on this trip or any other seen anything as beautiful as Milford Sounds is...amazing. We got soaked and therefore very cold. By the time we returned back into the car i was very very very cold....hudeled in everyones jackets. :-)
Jack got back on the beer as son as we got back to the hostal...i went out for acouple. The bar was full of 18 year olds...i was tired and had bungies first thing so bailed fairly early.
I woke up at 8ish...thinking "i just want today to be over". Ive bungied acouple of times before and the last one i did was so scary it wasnt fun. I felt physically sick and anxious. Decided id never do another one again. Then i get the biggest bungy in NZ for free its silly not to??? So...i check in, get weighed (put on weight since i left chch ohhh dear haha) and wait for the bus. Send acouple of "goodbye it was nice knowing you emails" haha and im off on the bus.
I arrive at the bungy sites and...feel ready to bail. I cant bail...i'll never live it down at work!!!! I am first up (don't know if this is a good thing or not???). The bungy is a hut in the middle of a canyon!!!! 143 metres high!!!! I get strapped up...he counts to 3 and...nothing!!!! I can't do it...4 more times he counts to three then i cover my eyes and practically fall off the ledge. The second i begin to fall i begin to enjoy it. It just the stepping off the platform that is hard. It goes against every natural instinct in your body!!! It felt good, well worth and yes...i would do it again.
Next up is the Arc Swing. The swing is...a swing (!?). The biggest swing in the world. I wasnt to worried about this one as....they drop you. You don't have to do anything other then sit and enjoy the views. It was in some ways scarier because i was waiting to be plumeted to my doom. NO CONTROL!!!! I did it with an English girl as the boys did the bungy and she didn't want to go on her own. It was awesome, my stomach nearly came out of my chest. Another thing ticked off the list!!
That night was my last night in Queesntown....i wa son a high from my bungies and on a mission to end it well. We had a real good group so arranged a party in our room then headed to town. We all sang greenday and a number of other songs while Rory played the guitar. I love love love the guitar and wish i had the time and patience to learn how to play.
Following day we played Frisbee golf...ive never heard of it before but let me tell you it is alot more fun then real golf. :-) The boys played silly buggars by jumping off the pier...i played photographer. I don't do the cold....and it was frezzing. Snow melting into the lakes...beautiful from the outside.
It felt really good to be back on the road, i'm looking forward to future adventures. For now i need to get back into saving mode :-)
