We finally got to go inside Edinburgh Castle today. It was really great. So much history took place in and around that castle, it really is incredible. I learned so much about Scotland through the castle. The oldest building is the chapel from the 1100's. At the entrance to the castle walls stands the statues of William Wallace 'Braveheart' and Robert the Bruce. These two figures are emensely important to the Scottish people. Though time spent in the castle was short I was there long enough to feel as though I had stepped back in time. I could just imagine what it must have been like nearly 1,000 years ago.
From the castle we went down the hill of the royal mile to the Parliment building. I was very impressed by the events that took place to return to Scotland her own parliment. My initial thoughts on the building, however were that there was a lot of money spent on it that was not necessary. The building cost 10 times more than the original estimate. Supposedly a work of art, I don't find it to be all that attractive, but that's just my opinion. Parliment is similar to that of the United States Senate, with many exceptions. Decisions of Scottish Parliment are subject to veto by Great Brittain.
Tonight we ate at a really great pub called Haymarket. The meal cost £2.99, and I got a slice of steak pie, chips (french fries), and peas. Katie got lasagna and salad for the same price. The interior of the building was very victorian. We walked around for another hour before going to bed around ten o'clock (it was still light outside because sun rises 4:00am and sets 10:00pm).
