Today was actually cloudy at dawn, but the clouds soon burnt off and another warm, sunny day followed. Regular as clockwork.
We decided to do the walk upriver to the falls, but it was about three times longer than we expected, and at moderate grade with a fair bit of rock scrambling, Narrelle found it tough going. We made it there eventually.
The falls or cascades had a fair bit of water coming down and the pool at the bottom was large and deep. Deb and I had a swim, even going through the falling water to a cavern behind them. ’Twas a special experience to look out at the gorge through the falling water. The water itself is so fresh and clean and clear and refreshingly cool, swimming in it just makes you feel alive! Its appeal even overcame Len’s extreme distaste for cold water, and he had a dip. The boys enjoyed playing in the sand and climbing on the cascades.
After the long walk back to the campsite and the billabong, we enjoyed a late afternoon swim (Deb, Len, me) or float (Narrelle and the boys). The boys sat on a tractor tube and I towed them to the quiet end of the billabong, where I saw a Black Bittern peep out from the pandanus, then fly out and away. I never expected to see any bitterns on this trip, or ever, in fact ... but now I’ve seen two!
