Today we explored nearby Geikie Gorge, Deb and I on foot and the others on a boat cruise. It’s a wide, shallow gorge with two-tone sheer limestone cliffs on one side, craggy limestone hills on the other which look like piles of black icing squeezed through a piping bag, and lots of coarse sand in between. Saw some other walkers photographing a raptor which flew off just as we arrived, it was smallish with a crest and light-coloured speckled wings - my first thought was a Harrier, but in my guide the only crested raptor is a Baza, so maybe that’s what it was.
Had a lazy afternoon, although I did work out an itinerary for our return journey, so we can track our progress and get home with a couple of days to unpack and “get used to the place” before heading back to work and school. Our return journey will be via Kununurra, Katherine, Cloncurry, Charleville, Bourke, Dubbo and Mudgee, so might just have to spend our last night at Dunn’s Swamp!
