Started today with a quick trip to the Derby bird observatory, which is a small man-made wetland created specifically for birdwatching; basically it is a section of the wastewater treatment plant. Great idea and a great place, let down by poor signage and maintenance. Didn’t catch any new birds on the wetland, but did get some shots of Plumed Whistling Duck (a lifer), hundreds of which were hanging around the primary ponds of the treatment plant.
After a few phone calls we established that Broome could cope with our presence tonight, albeit at the ‘overflow’ caravan park. So here we are in the grounds of the PCYC, who run it.
As we walked around the retail precinct called ‘Chinatown’ (which seems to be a misnomer) we came across a ‘picture garden’ which happened to be showing ‘Cars 2’ this evening. The boys were keen so we wolfed down some dinner and went along. I’ve never been to a picture garden before, basically a roofless cinema, but it’s been here a while, the building and seating are both relics of a bygone era ... so perhaps they were once more common than they are today. Perfect climate up here for such venues.
We had a great time, the movie was fun, non-stop action and laughs. The plot was way over the top, but that was partly due to the 007 spoof angle, and the positive themes made up for it anyway. The star of the movie was (Tow) Mater, with lots of work for Luigi and Guido, and the new characters Finn McMissile and Holly Shiftwell were very well done ... Michael Caine is a legend. “Shoot!”
