Today we passed through the hamlet of McKinlay, whose pub featured in the Crocodile Dundee movies as the “Walkabout Creek Hotel”. I took a photo, but this one off the net is better.
At the next hamlet, Kynuna, we stopped for lunch, and in the absence of a park we picnicked in the one-star caravan park. Well, it did have one tottery washing machine, so maybe it’s one-and-a-half stars. It’s saving grace was a friendly brolga who was after food; it would even take crusts held out at arm’s length, although it was a bit nervous doing so, so it would peck quickly and I didn’t want a quick peck from that sizeable beak anywhere near my hand. Got some photos from within 2 metres ... with the wide-angle lens!
In Winton we had to queue for fuel; one of the two servos is closed on Sundays, and the other one was short-staffed. Both the customers and the staff were frustrated. I guess the basic problem is that tourism is so strongly seasonal up here, but Winton wouldn’t attract any seasonal workers.
We are camped in the rest area near Longreach which we used on the way up. I do love a campfire (our last one was three weeks ago) and a starry sky and being out in the bush.
