Great day today, no packing and no driving! Leisurely day just doing some washing and having play time. And the weather, well it was about as pearly and peachy as you could wish for, mild-to-warm and sunny, maximum of about 27, but with a cool easterly breeze making it feel more like 23. We are full of smugness seeing the chilly weather reports for the southern states ... in the middle of the afternoon today it was 13 degrees at home and with wind chill it felt like 6! Yikes!
Spent a lovely afternoon at Mary Kathleen Memorial Park, which had a great new playground, green grass, heaps of shady trees, numerous sprinklers which were good for keeping cool, a water feature with waterfalls and a bridge, and old railway implements and other machinery scattered over the lawn. A small hill behind the park provided 360 degree views of the area, which is actually quite varied and attractive.
A sign on the way into town notes that Cloncurry holds the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in Australia, which doesn’t engender instant attraction for the place, but when you step out of the car in the caravan park, see the bougainvilleas and scent the frangipanis, it’s a bit like stepping off a plane in Fiji. We had a swim in the pool today, the water was a refreshing 21 degrees, a little cooler than the boys are used to, but in the ballpark unlike the pool at Roma. So, all in all, this is a town in which I’d be happy to spend more time, as long as it’s in June or July.
At tea time Max lost his first baby tooth. Yesterday he complained about sore teeth, so I asked him if any were loose, and he discovered that the bottom left front tooth was wobbly. He brightened up after that discovery, once he understood what was happening. So tonight, when he touched it and it fell out, he proudly announced to everyone, in his loud and excited voice, that his tooth had fallen out. He then immediately wanted to test his new ability to drink through a straw with clenched teeth. Then the tooth, which was on the table, disappeared while we were washing up, and as six adults with torches on their hands and knees were unable to find it, Grandma helped him write a note for the tooth fairy to explain the situation. Max then needed to remind himself that the tooth fairy was a grown-up and should therefore have no difficulty reading the note!
Off to the (Northern) Territory tomorrow, as we inch closer to the Kimberley.

Jane Glad to hear the tooth fairy has made the first visit to Max! Sounds like you're having lots of fun and there's still more to come. Love the blog. :)
