Another pearler of a day today. Three highlights: firstly, got some more avian lifers, the Red-winged Parrot and the Great Bowerbird; thirdly, we’re in a great caravan park at Katherine surrounded by palms and we’re booked on a river cruise tomorrow; and secondly, we loved swimming in the thermal pool at Mataranka.
The pool is formed by a tiny weir across a small creek fed by a natural spring. The creek has a sandy bottom so the pool is a beautiful blue colour, and the water temperature is a comfortable 30 degrees. The boys had their goggles on and enjoyed duck-diving to touch the bottom.
But what really makes the place special is the native cabbage palm forest surrounding the spring and pool, which turn the place into a genuine oasis. These palms are similar to those along the Finke River at Palm Valley in central Australia, which we saw in 2002. I really wish I’d brought my tripod so I could have produced some HDR images of this forest.

Karen Dundules Use your iPhone for HDR pics! Ok, wrong league - but worth a try!
Brett Hehe I have the iPhone in HDR mode, with the option to save the non-HDR image as well. Most of the pics I’ve posted were taken on the phone, some of them in HDR mode. But you’re right, what I was talking about was the full fruit cake. Google for “stuck in customs” if you want to see some unbelievably good HDR images.
