im sitting in a hostel in panama city, just checked out and have 8 hours till my flight to new york city.. this is what i have come to discribe as "superhectictravelday" number 2! last sleep for a while, as i fly out at 9pm and arrive in nyc at 3am and by the time i get through customs and reach my hotel, the tour will start at 7am for a full on day and night of sightseeing before i can sleep or shower again.. i pulled through shtd1 so im sure i can manage this one..
glad to be leaving panama behind, and looking forward to 4 days in new york before i head for iceland and greater europe. I acheived what i wanted to do here which entailed finding and photographing a toucan and believe me it wasnt easy! i spent a whole morning mountainbiking in soberania national park and saw many birds, a caiman, and a family of howler monkeys buuuuut no toucan. after returning to the resort the tour desk told me sometimes you can see them out the front of the resort at around 6.15an so i got up super early and will camera in tow, i waited... again i saw heaps of birds, a couple of squirells and a kapiburra but no toucan! defeated, i go back to my room and start to pack up readyfor check out and as i lay on the balcony in the hammock having my last cigarette, one flys right up and lands on a tree metres from me!
..and it wasnt just any toucan, it was a rainbow billed toucan, the one i wanted to see most. its like he came over and found me to say here i am! so i got 1 great photo and he was being pestered by other birds so then flew away. i was stoked, ever since i was a kid i have wanted to see a toucan, and seeing one in the wild was an awesome experience!
