After a bit of a fitful night's sleep as our little sleeper was a bit warm & the mattress a bit firm I awoke to the final announcement for the breakfast waiting list so pulled on my boots & probably a bit dishevelled looking went to put our names on it. It wasn't long before we were called but I was feeling pretty ordinary with a headache & sore neck but once I got some oatmeal & coffee into me I was feeling much better. We spent the morning looking at the changing scenery- it had been real Cowboys & Indian country when we woke up as we travelled through Utah. Big square valleys with sharp squared off ridges. By mid morning we were starting to climb into the Rockies so the snow covered mountain peaks & ranges wrapped off to the horizon in every direction. We stopped at Glenwood Springs & got off for a few minutes to look around & throw a snow ball or two. Back on we had chicken salad for lunch with Ken & Judy then watched the landscape narrow in & the train snake through snow covered canyons. The varying scenery has really made this journey as it changes around every bend. I've barely read a chapter of my book as the the view is constantly captivating. Almost ahead of time we arrived into Denver having managed to fit in an early dinner (mum & I shared another steak). The train descended into Denver from the hills & the lights of the city sparkled brighter & brighter. We said goodbye to Judy & Ken and entered the newly renovated stylish station building to meet Jess. Easily spotted as she entered the building it was hugs all around & then across the road to the Wyncoop brewery where we sampled 4-5 beers, one of which was the Rocky Mountain Oyster stout which is not a form of seafood but the nickname for bulls testicales which they use to make the beer- it was rather sour. Jess organised a lyft car to pick us up & take us to her little carriage house (a garage converted into a one bed unit). As we walked into the slightly cluttered place we were greeted by their foster dog Dalton & then by Sean. The evening was spent catching up & enjoying Sean's Irish stew with some red wine. Around midnight mum & I sorted out our beds, her on the blow up mattress in the lounge & me on the futon couch in the dining area. Jess showed us her spreadsheet of things she had organised for our visit- looks like we will be busy seeing all Colorado has to offer!
