We woke up from a comfortable night's sleep at the Vagabond Inn & went for the included hot breakfast then packed up our stuff. We had around 40mins to go for a walk so we cut through the car park to the old town area which was a little like sovereign hill with the old buildings from the gold rush period. After a brief look around we had to return to check out & go across the road to the station to catch the Californian Zephyr to Denver where we would finally arrive tomorrow night. Our 11.09 train was delayed by about 20 then finally it pulled into the station. We had been chatting with an American couple on the platform who happened to be in our carriage, they were upstairs & we were down. The little sleeper was a tight fit with luggage stored on racks outside but had good views out the windows. As we left Sacramento we climbed over the range with spots of snow visible barely a few hours out. We sat down to a lunch in the dining car of pork shanks & mash then returned to our sleeper for an afternoon nap which accidentally lasted over 2hrs so we totally missed seeing Reno. The scenery was still very picturesque but a little flatter on the high desert. It was barely a couple of hours before it was dinner & we ended up sharing a table with Ken & Judy, the American couple we met on the platform. The steak was amazing which is pretty impressive for a train & we had a ball chatting away with lots of laughs & a bottle of wine bought up from our cabin as they had run out in the restaurant. Mum & I shared a strawberry cheesecake with ice cream the finish off a great day. Will definitely have to do this trip again some day with Sean as he would be in his element!
