This morning we were picked up at 7.30am to start our 3 day trek to Poon hill. We were first driven to Nyalpul about an hour and a half from Pokhara where the trail starts. Eager to get going we cut through the village then continued up a dirt track/road which after an hour or so became very hot in the direct sun. Dust filled the air when the occasional 4x4 careered past and finally after about 3hrs of walking up & up we came to the start of the foot only trail which wove along stone paths, past terraced fields with the river dancing over rocks below. We passed corn & potato fields with local village peasants working their meagre land & the occasional herd of donkeys carrying supplies past us. At around 1pm we arrived to our accommodation for the night- it certainly had a rustic charm with thin mattresses on wooden slat beds with almost see through thin ply walls but the attached bathroom with hot shower was appreciated. We also had lunch here- the usual simple menu with a choice of noodles, rice or Dahl bhat. We whiled the afternoon away reading, writing, sleeping & enjoying a masala tea whilst watching the local kids play cricket with whatever piece of wood & ball they could find. In the evening we enjoyed another meal in the basic restaurant that nearly looked in its shape like an old tram carriage perched on the side of the sloping hill. Whilst we ate a few drops of cleansing rain fell & not long after we also fell into bed.
