After an afternoon of relaxation in our hotel, and a delicious lunch by the pool, our sightseeing in Aswan began with the Nubian museum in the early evening. We really felt the benefit of having an expert guide here - on our own we'd have wandered around the exhibits pretty aimlessly, impressed with some, less so with others, but Magdi was able to pick out the important things, tell us lots of detail about why they were important and fit them into he overall context of the history of the area. So what we might have considered an OK museum with some fantastic pieces turned into a really interesting visit. Magdi's speciality is everyday life in ancient Egypt, so we're looking forward to finding out much more about the ordinary people, what they believed, how they might have lived and so on. From the museum, we continued to Philae temple, involving a short boat ride to the island, giving us the chance to see a wonderful sunset as we made our way through the rocky islands between the two Aswan dams. On this trip, we are accompanied by our friendly representative in Aswan, Ahmed. We met him first before the cruise, and he also came down in the minibus to meet us at Abu Simbel. He is an absolutely lovely bloke who makes us feel so welcome to his city, definitely more like a friend than a client/supplier relationship. The sound and light show was different to previous ones, in that you spend the first half actually walking around the illuminated temple before sitting down for the rest of the show. The temple itself is fantastic, the largest we have visited as far, and spectacular when lit up. Part of the show was a round up of all the people who had been to the site over the years - kings of Egypt, Cleopatra, Mark Antony, Caesar, Alexander the Great, Napoleon…… Amazing to follow in the footsteps of all of these people! After the show, it is back to the hotel, for a welcome cold beer before retiring to bed
