Brenton Kovacs's Travels
6th
Well its time to leave Zurich and head south to Interlaken. Its a beautiful blue sky day.
The train ride to Interlaken takes 3 hours. The scenery is stunning to say the least. Lush green valleys, snow capped mountains, turquoise coloured lakes. I wish it took longer than 3 hours, as i was thoroughly enjoying the scenery.
Its a 1.5k walk from the train station to where i am staying, City Chalet. Its a group of Chalets next to the river in Interlaken. The studio room i have is really cosy, and i am sure i will sleep well here.
Unfortunately the pictures taken from inside the train did not work to well.

Early start today, as i am off to the Top of Europe. Its called the Jungfraujoch Mountain. The train ride will take 2.5 hours and will climb from 1000 metres above sea level to 3,500 metres. The first train takes you to Grindelwald where we change trains and then its up to Kleine Scheidegg. Here we change again and the climb really begins to get steep.
I am impressed at how steep these trains can climb, and how they use the cog gear system to drive the train.
Well the views are pretty stunning at Jungfraujoch. You can see the Eiger, Monch, Jungfrau peaks plus more. At the very top there is a viewing platform. Just below is a restaurant, further down you can walk out onto a small plateau to experience the snow. Inside the mountain there is a labyrinth of tunnels. One takes you to the ice castle to see ice carvings. Yes it is pretty cold in the ice tunnel.
Now as the return train only leaves on the hour its time to leave at 3pm. The 3 hours i spent on the mountain went too quickly. I arrive back in Interlaken just before 6pm. The weather today was beautiful, even it it was minus 4 on the mountain. As long as you had sunshine on you it didn't feel that cold.

Today i am off to Schilthorn. It was made very famous in a James Bond Movie. It is a nice sunny day so i expect good viewing. The journey starts with a train ride to Lauterbrunnen, then is a cable car to Murren. Murren is a small car free village, and you have to walk through the town to connect to the next cable car. The village is very quiet and beautiful, and the views are great.
The cable car from Murren to Schilthorn is spectacular to say the least. We climb from 1,600 metres to just under 3,000 metres above sea level. Piz Gloria is the final stop where there is a revolving restaurant and a 360 degree viewing platform. Well i thought the views were impressive yesterday, well these are just so mush better. This is where the bond film was shot, so there is lots of bond stuff to see.
Now as its lunch time i thought of having lunch back down at Murren, but after looking at the prices for the revolving restaurant i change my mind. I opt for the buffet salad bar for $10 and a grilled sausage with a wicked sauce for $8. After paying $24 for bratwurst and chips yesterday, this is much better in quality and value considering my view is continually changing. I make lunch last 1 revolution, but i could well stay for another, as the views are just breathtaking.
I decide to take the cable car down to Stechelberg, and then the bus to Interlaken. This way i don't do any backtracking. After waiting 15 minutes for the bus i spot a sign that tells me i can walk back to Lauterbrunnen. Its a 1.5 hour walk. Why not, the sun is still shining and its a balmy 8 degrees. The first part of the path is a snowy, icy slippery, before changing to a paved path. It is only when i look over my shoulder that i stop in my tracks. The view of the mountains is beautiful.
The path runs along a small river in the Lauterbrunnen valley, and there are huge vertical cliffs both sides. Every now and then it sounds like a gun shot, but it is ice or rocks falling from the cliffs. It is such a peaceful walk with amazing views and crisp clean air. Oh how good it is to be alive!
I arrive in Lauterbrunnen and take the train to Interlaken where i walk back to my chalet. It will be an early night tonight. I am feeling a little worn out, so i will rest up tonight.
Tomorrow is meant to be another sunny day, but snow is expected the day after
