Brenton Kovacs's Travels
5th
My flight from Honolulu is 5 hours, but with the time difference i get into Vegas at midnight. By the time i get my bag, collect hire car, drive to hotel and get into bed its 2am. But i an still on Hawaii time so not really tired as Hawaii time is 10pm.

So i managed to get some sleep, and hit the road in my nice little Nissan Versa. The drive to Williams takes about 5 hours, as i was continually stopping to take in the scenery. The hotel i am staying at in Williams is cheap and a little rough, but will do. I spend an hour or 2 walking the streets of this very old and historic town on the famous Route 66 highway. Early start tomorrow as i am going to the Grand Canyon to do some hiking into the Canyon.

Didnt set my alarm, and you know it i slept in. Anyway after breakfast i leave for the Canyon. Its 100ks away and takes just on 1 hour. After parking the car i make my way to the shuttle bus that takes you around the park. I am going to the South Kaibab Trail. Now i have been to the Grand Canyon before, but never ventured any further than the lookouts.
The Kaibab hike takes 6 hours return. Its 10 kilometres return and descends nearly 1 kilometre. You get such a different perspective walking down into the Canyon. The views are mesmerising, stunning and breathtaking to say the least. There are many people trying to do this walk, but not many will go to Skeleton point, which is where i am aiming for.
I have to make way for mules coming up the path, which is a great time rest and take in the views. The first lookout is called Ooh-Ahh. And the views are just that. The narrow path along the edge of the cliff is very rough and and quite steep in places.
Next stop is Cedar Ridge then Skeleton point. I take in the views at Skeleton point before making the gruelling ascent. And it is gruelling. It take 2 hours to walk down and 4 hours to walk back up.
The views are worth every bit of the pain.
I know i will sleep good tonight.

Off to Page, Arizona to visit the famous Antelope Canyon. Its a 3 hour drive form Williams. Love driving my little Nissan as the fuel economy is a frugal 5 litres per 100ks, or 46mpg. So much cheaper to fill up than a bigger car. Anyway Antelope Canyon is pretty amazing. Our tour guide is also very informative. Such magnificent formations all carved by water. I can see why this place in on the 100 things to see before i die list.
Next stop is Horse Shoe bend. Its only a few miles from Antelope Canyon. The car park is about 1 kilometre from the overlook, and its uphill in sandy soil. Plus the wind is blowing a gale, and i am now getting sand blasted. The view form the lookout is pretty good, but one needs to stay back from the cliff edge as a strong gust could blow you off. And i am not kidding as the wind is gusting so strong that its actually pushing me. And its now not only the sand thats getting carried by the wind, its now small rocks, and they hurt.
So its back to the car on another hour drive time puts me in Kanab for the night. A cheap motel is my accommodation for the night. Tomorrow its a 3 to 4 hour drive back to Vegas.
