Brenton Kovacs's Travels
4th
The train ride to Takayama was good. Plenty of nice scenery, especially when we climbed higher into the alps. Still lots of snow/ice on the ground. We arrive into Takayama around 3pm and made our way to the hotel, which was a 5 minute walk. The weather is really nice so we get straight back out and walk the streets till dark.
The old streets in Takayama are really cool, with some business dating back over 250 years, and still going strong. Mainly selling Sake and Soy products.

Had to happen sooner or later. The rain has been falling since early this morning, and doesnt look like it will stop any time soon. After the free hotel breakfast we grab our umbrellas and head out. Still managed to see a lot, and the town is very crowded with tourists. We spend quite a bit of time inside the historic little shops sampling all types of food and pickles, miso soup, rice crackers etc. In fact we skip lunch as we eat so many samples.

Still raining this morning. The umbrellas are getting lots of use here as we head up into the hills to see the historic area where the temples are located. It is very peaceful sitting on the steps of a temple's veranda, watching and listening to the rain fall. Back into town and to seek out more food samples, as they are all so good. The rain doesnt let up for the whole day, but we still managed to see most touristy things, and some of the more modern shops in town.
Takayama is a rather quiet little village during the week, but gets very busy on the weekends. Such a nice nice place where life is pretty laid back. Great place to get acquainted with Japanese village lifestyle. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay here, even if out hotel room was the smallest room so far. No kidding it would be no more than 10 square metres. Still beats a capsule hotel.
Tomorrow we are taking the bus to Nagoya at 12pm. Will take 2.5 hours to get to Nagoya. I have a feeling the wet weather will follow us to Nagoya
