Brenton Kovacs's Travels
28th June
It was so nice to arrive at the Hotel. 11 hours in the plane and 5 hours in the bullet train. The bullet train is pretty fast. We clocked it at 290kph with the GPS. So smooth and quiet.
Weather has been nice in Hiroshimura. Spent our first day seeing the Peace park where the first atomic bomb exploded. The museum had some interesting and sombering displays from the after effects of the bomb.
The rest of the day was spent exploring the city on foot. Very tired and sore by the end of the day.
29th June
Glorious day with temperature in the mid 20's, but the humidity is high.
Today we caught a train and ferry to the little island called Miyajima. Its about 50ks from Hiroshimura. What an amazing place. Th main attraction is the Torii Gate and the Temples. So peace and quiet. We really stood out in the crowd as we were the only westerners on the island that we saw. The island has many tame Deer that wander the street. So tame you can pat them.
Walking the little street with many little eateries gave us an appetite. Our fist taste of Japanese food was good. We ate a Okonomiyaki. It is a combination of batter, noodles, cabbage, bean sprouts, egg, sauce. Very filling and tasty. Some food here is so cheap, and some is so expensive.
We bought 1 litre of 100% apple juice for $2. 12 pack of icecreams for $3. We saw meat for sale in a supermarket for $390 a kilo, and it was so heavily marbled you were just buying fat.
All the food shopping is so different from home. Nothing is in large or bulk sizes, everything is so small. You buy sliced bread in packets of 3, 4, 5, or 6 slices. We took full advantage of all the free tastings on offer. All were thoroughly enjoyed.
The people here are so nice and polite. The streets are so clean and tidy. All the cars are very quiet and nobody every toots the horn. One problem is avoiding all the cyclists on the footpath.

Arose to a rather bleak looking day. Cloudy with drizzling rain. Our Shinkansen (bullet) train ride to Kyoto took a few hours. Checked into the hotel and walked to Nishiki market in the rain. Went back to Kyoto Train station to see more of it. This place is huge, probably the biggest train station we have seen. Headed back to the hotel via the worlds largest wooden Temple, and it was huge. Will take a rest tonight as the feet are very sore.
