We got up fairly early and followed Ken into Hobart - so we wouldnt get lost! we looked into the tourist info office and decided just to wander round. we booked a jet boat tour for later, i thought it would be really expensive (it was ridiculously dear in sydney) but it was only $55 each for a 90minute tour!! We walked up past Salamanca market, and sort of went the long way round to get to the mall! once there we had a subway for lunch and dropped into an internet cafe.
we walked back down to the port, but it was too early still for the jet boat so we got some gorgeous sorbet!! mmm!!! had to eat it quickly as we'd misjudged the time and the boat was there!!
boat ride was so much fun, it went really fast and we went all the way around Betsy island, saw all sorts of birds including sea eagles!
After that we headed to Port Arthur. on the way we stopped at EagleHawk Neck, where theres some touristy attractions. We saw the blow hole, the devils kitchen and the tasman arch, which are all pretty amazing rock formations along the coast, it was pretty cool. we had a ghost tour booked for 9:30 and had heaps of time once we got to Port Arthur, so we decided to do some sightseeing! We went for dinner at a random comfort inn, which was really nice! carmen had lamb roast and i had the seafood platter, which was huge!! we asked one of the waitresses who was local what we could go and see, and she recommended the Remarkable Cave and the coal mines, so off we went.
On arriving at the remarkable cave, we started down the 100 steps, or so she'd said! there were in fact 115 - we were very disappointed, and had a good mind to go back and tell her to get her facts right.
when we got within view of the cave we had to jump a barrier (said it was unsafe due to storm damage - pish posh) to actually see into the cave, which was not that remarkable! the sign said that the hole at the end was in the shape of tasmania, but it was just a blob - could have bee anything! we found this very amusing and took the mickey out of the cave all night!
on the way to the coal mines i was introduced to a road trip game. if there are any farm animals on your side of the car, you have to open your window and moo/baa/neigh/cluck/etc as loud as you can. you then get points for every animal that turns its head! sheep are worth one point, because once one looks they all do, cows are 5, and horses are 10. because we got lost on the way to the coal mines, we went up and down the same road several times, and were well prepared for the animals!!! so much fun!!
when we finally got to the coal mines it was too dark to go in and we would be late for the ghost tour, so we had to leave. at least we found them!!!
the ghost tour was ok, it was basically a lady telling us ghost stories as we walked around the old jails and asylums of port arthur (the first convict settlement) and shouting boo now and again!! very interesting though!!!
we went back to the caravan park at about 11pm, and went straigh to bed!
