Got up nice and early, had some nice pancakes to start the day well then went for our briefing from Luke, the nutty tour guide! We were told all about the food, what to eat when, what parts of the island are 'must see', where to camp, the route to take, and the real way to deal with dingoes! We watched a video which tells you to cross your arms across your chest and back away slowly. Luke said its best to act agressive, and run towards them shouting! Got into our groups from last night, theres Mette, Sebastian (both dutch), Mick, Mick, Kevin (Irish), Paddy, Me, Ruth (English), Natasha and Esther (German). Mixed group! The drivers had their briefings, we were given the copious amounts of alcohol we ordered, then we were off!
Got the ferry over to the island which takes all of 7 minutes! Once there, we all took a few minutes to adjust to just how amazingly beautiful it is. Its the worlds largest sand island, and the sand is all white and fine and soft, and the sea is millions of shades of blue, and crystal clear! Unfortunately, we were pretty much banned from swimming in the sea, as there are heaps of tiger sharks (not very friendly) and lots of jellyfish, including those little blue ones about 2cm across which can actually kill you! quite a few box jellies around too so I was quite happy to stay out of the sea!
The first stop of the day was Eurong village, where we had a toilet stop and changed into swimming stuff ready for Lake McKenzie. We had been told that this lake is the highlight of the island, but nothing could have prepared us! Its huge, and completely crystal clear, and so pure that you can quite happily swim along drinking it. Coupled with a white sandy beach it was beautiful! I was scared a little bit because for about 6 feet its shallow and turquoise, then it gets deep extremely suddenly and just goes dark blue! We did the corny tourist pictures of all the girls lying in the water while the guys played football, had a swim around, then dried off and moved on.
We went straight to Maheno camp ground for the night, right next to the Maheno shipwreck, which is amazing to see! We set up the 4 landcruisers so that they blocked the wind and tied tarps between them so we had a pretty good windblock, then set up the tents, and started cooking. Me and Ruth cooked that night, we had steak with potato salad and green salad, and it was might nice but the cooks miscounted and we had one steak too few! Divided them up...everyones happy. They boys washed up in the sea then we cracked open the beers (or the goon if you're me and ruth) and partied the night away! Played several drinking games including Boat Race (previously explained and lethal) and the Sealife Song, where everyones a sea creature and you drink when you forget who you are. So all the bloody time! Also went for a moonlight expedition to the wreck, probably not sensible but fun! Climbed all over it, broke every rule in the book! I was getting the shovel out the back of the car to go to the loo, and thought there was one more step than there was......big tumble! scraped and bruised all the way down my shins and fell flat on my back with a thump...much to the amusal of the rest of the group!
