Day One: Got the campervan from the depot, it actually says Town Drunk down the side! quite fitting really....! We went to the supermarket and stocked up on instant noodles, pasta, sausages and chocolate, filled up the petrol tank and off we went!
We trundled along the roads to Lake Tekapo, a massive and beautiful lake that was almost completely obscured by clouds! Oh well. We parked up for the night in a motel carpark (highly illegal) and proceeded to make dinner. Pot Noodles. Tom was trying to start up the gas stove, and all i could hear was hissing. i suddenly realised he hadnt engaged the gas properly, so stopped him and showed him the right way. he then tried igniting it, and you can guess what happened.....BOOOOM! the stove was on the back shelf at the time, and went up in flames! we somehow managed to throw it onto the floor and put it out, then eventualy managed to heat the water enough for noodles. We actually found that the flavoured water in the bottom is nicer than the noodles themselves! We decided that the new term for people like us is 'Inurvans' which is like Inuit but in vans. Then we played 20 questions until we fell asleep!
Day Two: Woke up to snooooooooooow! Still couldn't really see the lake but we got the idea. Got some coffee, defrosted the van then set off for queenstown. About 20kms down the road the snow cleared a bit and we could see the incredible views :-) We rolled into Queenstown around mid afternoon and headed to the bungee booking place straight away! We both booked in for the Nevis Highwire Bungy tomorrow and i booked onto the skyswing for this afternoon! had a quick look around then got the gondola to the top of the town where the swing is, its 47 swing over the town, up on a mountainside! very scary but completly amazing! Tom and I then did the luge, which is totally for kids but lots of fun!
That night we used the showers at the YHA and then headed off to find somewhere to camp the night. We found a deserted carpark, actually the carpark for a campng site mwahahah!! Camped the night there, more 20 questions!
Day 3: drove back into qtown and parked up, and got all our cameras etc all ready for the bungy! we got the bus, its about a 45 minute journey up the valley, then they weighed us all again, gave us harnesses, and took us over to the gondola 6 at a time. once over there, its all crazy! theres load music and people jumping every 5 minutes! you get a 30 second briefing and then sit in a dentist style chair while they attach you to the cord. Then they reiterate the fact that you must go head first, and then ask you to shuffle to the edge. It gives you enough time to look down at what you're jumping into.....a valley! the jump is 134m high, and all of a sudden they shour 3...2...1...BUNGEEEEE! and for some reason you oblige and jump off the edge! crazy! the rush is like nothing else in the world. you are flying headfirst into a rock canyon, and the freefall is 8.5 seconds!!! I cant explain the feeling....its a must do! That night we drove to Mossburn, a little village on the way to Te Anau, we couldnt get to Te Anau as the fog was too bad to drive in. Had a nice dinner at a pub then camped up for the night.
Day 4: Drove to Te Anau, filled up petrol and then carried on to Milford Sound. The drive there was incredible, all snowy mountains and huge valleys. We went through the Homer Tunnel, its 1.2km long and on a slope...very scary! Finally got to Milford Sound...its everything we thought it would be and more....its sensational! Spent the afternoon pottering round there then decided to drive all the way back to Queenstown that night, as there are some big hills that would be dodgy in the morning! Made it back by abour 8pm, used the kitchen at the YHA to make pasta, showered, then slept in their carpark! Mwahaha!!!
