Up early today and headed off in a jeep to the Western Desert which is the start of the Sahara. Arrived in the town of Bahariya at lunch time. This is the nearest oasis to Cairo. It's amazing how you can drive through the desert for hours with there being nothing but rocks and sand, and all of a sudden- palm trees, and greenery, and life.
Bahariya is a very small town. We spent a while just walking around it. They grow dates there, and wow did they taste good. We also had two more Aussie girls join us there, which now makes us six (two kiwis and four Aussies) plus our local guide, and we also picked up three Bedouin guides. The Bedouins are just the most lovely people. They are always smiling and laughing. Everything is a joke to them. In Bahariya all these local kids came out and started kicking soccer balls to us. We played and took photos of them. We showed them their photos on the camera screen and they thought it was amazing. Such cute kids.
After Bahariya we kept driving out into the White Desert. So beautiful. All white sand with white limestone rocks jutting out everywhere in all sorts of formations. Looked kind of like we were in the arctic with ice bergs everywhere. At sunset pulled the jeeps over in the middle of the desert and camped for the night. Most beautiful sunset I've ever seen. Bedouins started a campfire and cooked us traditional food and sang all night. Threw sleeping bags on sandy desert and slept under stars. It's amazing with no lights around just how many stars you can see. Saw a few shooting stars too. Having a great time.
Love to all!
Ps - mum and dad... We were pulled over in the middle of the white desert taking a break this arvo when two motorbikes came riding over and stopped to talk to our guides. They both had three big boxes around the back of their bikes, Arai helmets and body armour, and cameras on their helmets. I couldn't help myself... I ran over and said "so which one is Ewan and which one is Charlie? And where is Claudio?" They both laughed. Turns out it's these two croatian guys doing their own version of "the long way down". Had a good chat to them... Only difference was they were riding KTM:)
