This morning I took a drive along the coast past Lady's Mile Beach to the ruins of the ancient town of Kourion. Spent the morning exploring the ruins which date to around the 3rd century BC. The town is built at the top of these sheer cliffs that just drop into the crystal blue ocean. While the ruins were amazing it was the views that were absolutely spectacular. I took a climb to two lookouts above the ruins and I've never seen anything quite like it. Will upload the photos, although I don't think they really capture the whole scene.
The ruins themselves were interesting. Old baths, houses, gladiator houses, and an amphitheater. In summer they still have open air concerts here with the orchestra playing to a backdrop of the Mediterranean.
After Kourion I kept driving along the coast to the ruins of the Kourion sporting arena, and finally the ruins of the sanctuary of apollon ylatis. All very beautiful. The coastal road was also a lot of fun as it wound it's way along the tops of the cliffs.
This afternoon it was back to Limassol. Being a Monday I was finally able to go to the bank and change my Egyptian pounds and withdraw some cash. No longer feel like a hobo. Yay!
Then went on to the Limassol medieval castle and museum. Lots of armor, weaponry, clay, pottery, etc. The castle is also famous because it is where Richard the Lionheart was married. In fact, Limassol was the first port he took control of in Cyprus, which began the British occupation. Just so you know. Also visited the grand mosque. Was not that grand. Especially after the ones in Egypt.
Going to have an early one tonight as tomorrow I plan to drive to Troodos. Not that far from Limassol, but apparantly the roads are quite difficult through the mountains. I also have to drive through the Cypriot wine country to get there... Wish I could stop for some tasters, but figure I probably shouldn't risk it with the drive:(
