So after arriving at 7:30am we wanted to get straight to our guesthouse and into bed. This proved more difficult than we first thought. We were told the locals except kip, baht and dollar. We had $3 on us and like 10000 baht, no kip. We asked the little tuk tuk man for the price in baht, he said 20000 kip (£1.50) or 9000 baht (£180) ha ha, they clearly don't have a clue what the exchange rate is. So after a lot of confusion we told him to take us to an ATM, we told him it needed to accept foreign cards but I don't think he truly understood.
So we set off finally and he stopped at an group of ATM's, none accepted our card, not one! Nightmare, I asked him where there were anymore and if he would accept 100 baht. He just pointed me in the direct of another cash machine. Finally I got to one that accepted our card and withdrew enough to pay for the guesthouse and our taxi.
It was a crazy little place, everyone seemed to like to hang out in the lobby area. It was full of your typical travelling hippies. We didn't care one bit and our main concern was getting our asses to sleep seeing we had been up for 24 hours.
We woke up at 11:30 and got ourself ready to head out to look around. We found some little exchange place, so first on the list was to exchange some Baht for Kip. He quoted us one price and actually ended up giving us more, so a great start to the day. We decided to have a look along the riverside and stopped at a little busy restaurant. We ordered rice, fried egg and chicken and a tuna baguette and chips. The food actually came out pretty quick and was great. It came to 115000 kip (£9) so abit more expensive than the Thai prices we had been used to. I think Luang Prabang is quite expensive as it is the main location everyone heads to after crossing the border.
After we finished our food we decided to have a little walk around, we seen some monkeys in a cage by the riverside. They looked happy enough but were pretty cramped up, why do people do this?? After having a good walk around we stopped at a little bar on the main street, they had good wifi, great cold beer and it was ideal for people watching. It was our first try of the local Beer Lao, its not as good as Chang but still pretty easy to drink, but only 5%.
After a few drinks and just chilling we headed back to the room for abit, we were still pretty shattered from the bus journey but knew we needed to stay awake so we could sleep all night. After chilling for about an hour we got ready and headed out to the night market, it was buzzing, they had a whole side street with a buffet selection, whole row of smoothies and crepes (Kara's Heaven) and loads of stalls selling clothes, bags etc. We grabbed a mango and passion fruit smoothie to walk around with before we decided what to eat. We found a great little stall selling dim sums so we had to take these on, they were so good that we ended up going back for seconds! ha ha. We also got some rice and chicken before treating ourself to banana and Nutella crepe, ordered another smoothie and headed back for a much needed good nights sleep. When we got back to the guesthouse, the same people were still sat in the lobby! Strange little setup, there were people painting the walls and just basically dossing around.
We Skyped my Nan as it was her birthday yesterday so this made her happy. We crashed out and soon drifted off to sleep ready to explore some more tomorrow.
J&K over and out!
