Here we are in sunny California. One moment we are soaring over the seemingly endless city lights of Los Angeles marvelling at the sheer size, the next Nige is steering us through the tangled web of freeways as we head north west to Glenys and Chucks. Not without the odd moment of stress but generally all good thanks to our good friend GPS!
To assimilate with the locals we spent our first day at the local mall - when in California, shop!
Next day we braved the freeways and hit Hollywood, Sunset Boulivard, Beverley Hills and then over to the amazing Getty Centre. This is a must see in LA. Sadly the girls didn't spot any stars except for the ones on the pavement. Nige was happy to confirm Tom Petty had been enshrined with a star - but then so had Kermit the Frog.
Sunday saw us check out Glenys' horses and the ranch where she keeps them - a very impressive setup. Then we hit the PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) down to Santa Monica and Venice Beach. We had the benefit of having Chuck as our local tour guide. After walking the SM pier we wandered through Santa Monica and then along the promenade to Venice Beach. What a place to people watch!! Then back home for a family get together. It was such a good evening catching up with all the US family. Becca and Johnny went to a huge effort cooking a delicious dinner and we really enjoyed meeting everyone - some for the first time. Glenys and Chuck can be very proud of their family! We were treated like royalty!
Monday we spent the day in Disneyland. We did all we could in 14 hrs and staggered back to the car around 11pm satisfied that we had managed to do all the rides and see all the shows we wanted. It was spring break and we think most of California had decided to show up to Disneyland with us. The tricky bit for Nige was getting from one side of LA to the other in rush hour. We would get into the carpool lane and get hurtled along at up to 75 mph (120 kph) and then in what seemed a bkink we'd need to get across 6 lanes to change freeways. No pressure, no stress!
Today we will finish LA like we started - shopping. We'll give the outlet mall our best crack. Chuck has been amazing. We have been given the run off the house - feed, watered, and plied with fine (I think!) Californian red wine. He has been our tour guide and a wealth of information. And now it's on to New York City.
