Ah Lancashire, much maligned northern county surrounded by its superior neighbours. I joke of course - there is nothing superior about West Yorkshire. However the Shire of Lanc deserves a special visit since I spent three productive years there as a student of Lancaster University. If by productive you mean eating curries, building toilet roll forts and 5am footy sessions!
I set off to Longridge, home of the villainous Count Ig, and almost immediately it began to snow. I thought I'd seen the last of it for a few years at least, yet down it came, culminating in a total whiteout somewhere around Harrogate and me slip-sliding up the main street. Eventually however, things began to clear, and I crossed the border into Lancashire only around 20 miles from Longridge itself.
Which reminds me - isn't Yorkshire a big place? When I used to drive to uni it took two hours to cross it from my home of Pickering to the aptly named Tosside. I remember being pleased to hear that my neighbour in first year, Rick, was a fellow Yorkshireman, yet then surprised that he actually lived about sixty miles away near Skipton.
Anyhow, an evening of Pro Evolution soccer, an epic Burmese curry and Worms Armageddon satisfied my craving for Uni nostalgia. One last place I have to mention is Ribchester - home of my favourite graffiti. Underneath a large STOP sign, some total genius had written "Hammertime!" I just love that.
