Our second day in Orlando, time for a little maintenance involving a sleep-in and some washing. In the afternoon I caught the bus out to Disney World, or at least the Disney Wold transportation hub. The Disney presence in Orlando is so massive that the ticketing is done centrally, with each of the half-dozen parks connected by buses or, in the case of the EPCOT park, a monorail.
The monorail ride into EPCOT is an insipring ride. The train takes a wide loop around the central geodesic sphere, offering a great overview of the park.
EPCOT itself is divided into two parts. One is an exploration of environmental and technological innovations (including a pretty remarkable hydroponic greenhouse tour). The architecture and landscaping seems a little passe today, but it's easy to see the influence on later developments like Southbank and the Melbourne arts precinct.
The second part of the park (surrounding a beautiful lake) is a series of recreations of various countries, from Germany to Morrocco to Canada. Each area features replica buildings, restaurants and a stage/screen presentation. The buildings are remarkably realistic and the staff are recruited from their respective countries. It's a bit kitsch and pre-packaged but an interesting experience.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the fireworks display. Held high over the lake, centered around a giant illuminated globe and set to a rousing musical score, it was a brilliant spectacle. Big, loud and flashy: very American.
