A long coach ride yesterday brought us to the sleepy town of St Augustine, the oldest white settlement in the USA. Initially a Spanish settlement, the town had a long involvement with the local native tribe and with British pirates.
The evening featured a passable dinner and a pretty pathetic 'ghost tour' (St Augustine is purportedly the third most haunted town in the US, as seen on the Sci-fi Channel's 'Ghost Hunters' TM...)
In our free time this morning though we explored the Fountain of Youth park. Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer founded St Augustine in his quest for this fabled fountain. The park and the included tour were very informative, a great way to get a feel for the city's history and significance.
Our day ended in Savannah, Georgia. This is a truly beautiful town with a great deal of history, once being a centre for the cotton trade. We had quite a nice dinner at the historic Pirate House, although we got well and truly shafted on the drinks front. The price of a drink shouldn't jump by 70% between the menu and the bill.
After dinner a few of us headed out to the local pubs. We wound up in a bar with a live Blues band. I'm not sure if Blues is really my kind of music but the band itself was great. There really is something about live music that makes any venue come alive.
