Hi everyone, we have just arrived back from our jollies on Fraser Island and wow what an experience!
Fraser is the biggest sand Island in the world and has a reputation amongst travelers as being the best adventure you will have on your travels and beleive me it didnt disappoint. The morning of the trip we had to be up at 5.30 for the safety briefing and as usual we were the last out of bed so the last people to arrive (we are absolutely rubbish by the way but most of you will know this) anyway we made sure we had stocked up on the important stuff the night before. A cratet of beer, bottle of vodka, bottle of wiskey and just in case we got through those a 4 litter box of goon, lovely. After the briefing it was time to be put into our groups at random, luckally they kept us boys together and introduced us to the rest of the group the Canadian sorts (Julliet and Kenna) and three Frenchies (Aileen, Kim and Dennis). We all seemed to hit it off straight away and jumped into the 4 x 4 to get the shopping in.(Dave and Nick were the drivers by the way and did a bloody good job of it, Im sure I would have been better but I was needed in the back to entertain the ladies! well someone had to do it and those boys have the personality of Ian Beal, lol)
The shop turned into complete chaos, with no one taking control so as usual the English men headed straight for the burgers and sausages. The Frenchies, the salads and the healthy foods and the Canadian girls were just left bemused by the whole situation. By the time it came for us to leave we had stocked up on Burgers, sausages, crisp, chocolate and coca cola (our choices) and the rest of the group endulged in salads, pasta and a couple of tins of tuna.
We finally made it to the ferry just in time and our first stop on the Island was the magnificent lake Mackenzie. Dave decided to take the first stint at driving and seen as their are no roads on the island (its all sand) he found this a bit challenging at first. But it dosnt take Mr Moore very long to adapt to many situation and within minutes he had the peddle down blasting over the sand dunes like it was a game of saga rally. In the saftey briefing the instructor had told us that if you didnt like the way a person was driving say to them I want to take a picture please and all get out of the car. Well the French guys found this hilarious and every time he put his size twelves on the gas they asked to take a picture.
As I said lake Mackenzie was magnificent. A fresh water lake with white sands surrounding it. We all decided to jump in the water and try and make a human pyramid well the muscles were definatlly being flexed as we attempted to hoist Juliet to the top of it. It turned out to be a bit of a feeble attempt on our part as you can see from the picture, but we all had a good laugh at attempting it.
The next task for the group was to find a good spot on the beach to pitch up the tents for the night. Well we did manage to find a good location to make camp on the beach front, but the tents turned out to be rubbish. At the best of times we are not happy campers with a half decent tents but these things took the michael. 3 tents, 3 poles and a hand full of pegs, verry basic to say the least. The girls managed to get theirs up no problems, but the boy struggled and the girls took great pleasure out of seeing this (this would later come back on them). Once we had erected the tent it was night fall and time to spark up the barbie. The boys had agreed to cook the first night and the girls the second so this was fine by me. Once again my cooking skills didnt go unnoticed as I cooked up a mean burger under the stars on a little gas stove as the rest of the group gavered around me like a pack of wolves waiting for their kill. (I must thank my assistant also Miller and Jake, well I cant take all the credit).
After the top tucker it was time for the drinking to begin. We were all having a good time sharing jokes and telling stories. The warm alvino (beer) was flowing pretty nicely too when like a gift from the heavens a gust of wind blow down the girls tent. Honestly it was great to see the look on their faces and even better that they were begging to stay in our tent for the night, and how could we say no. So as gentlemen we let them stay the night even though it turned into a sweatbox in their it wasnt the worst night of my life.
The next morning we awoke around 7.30 packed the tents into the van and headed for Eli Creek. Eli Creek is the biggest fresh water creek on the Island and if you start at one end of it the current will carry you right back down to the beach. Awsome, but the only problem was that the water was freezing and it took a little encouragement from the ladies to get us into the water.
Our next stop on the map was the famous Maheno shipwreck were as you may have seen from the video we decided to make plonkers of our selves and have a dance off. Some embarrassed them selves more than others as you may have seen but I wont mention any names they know who they are (Mitchell). We then drove up to Indian Head which is the tip of the island and if you are lucky(as you know were not) on a clear day you can see the odd dolphin or tiger shark having a splash in the water below. Even though we didnt see either the views were breathtaking and made an awsome picture. After a quick nap at the champagne pool we headed back down the island to a nearby camp site for a much needed shower and a change of clothes before pitching up the tents for another night of luxury camping(really.lol).
This time we parked next to two other groups from the same company and as the blokes pitched the tents up (well we couldnt let the girls do it look what happened last time!!) the girls got the pasta on the stove. It turned out to be another great night and we all got on really well as we played a few games around the camp fire. As more liquer flowed the games started to become more eratic (truth or dare) and Mr Moore ended up taking on a dare to go to the other camp and like Oliver Twist say "please squire may I have some more.." they just looked at him in shock, Hilarious but he was a great sports so I'd take my hat off to you son if I had one. Later that night there was a bit of romance in the air as a shooting star (Dave thought it was a fire work) came racing across the sky and Miller and Kim were getting very cosy around the camp fire.lol.
On the third and final Day we packed up camp had a bit of brekkie and headed for lake Wabby. After walking for about 2km bare footed through the rain forest (I was sure I was going to get bit by a snake or a spider!) we arrived at the lake and again it was just another amazing site. A clear lake with a huge sand bank rolling down to it, and thats just what Dave and Miller did as we had races down to the water rolled head first down the bank. Again another memorable experience.
After stopping at the only cafe on the Island for a bite to eat seen as we didnt stock up on enough food, we made the journey back through the rain forest to the east side of the Island to catch the ferry back to the mainland. Unfortunately for one of the groups in our party there 4 x 4 broke down just before the ferry was about to set of, so they had to leave it on the Island despite their best attempts to push it up the ramp onto the ferry. I was just glad it wasnt us as they had to pay out 1000 dollors because of it.
That night all of the gang got together one last time in the hostels common room cracked open a couple of cold beers and said our goodbyes. It really was a great group of people and I hope we can all stay in touch seen as i quite fancy a trip to Canada one day.lol. No but seriously we had an amazing time and I just hope the Whitsundays can be as good even though weve got a small matter of an eleven hour drive to get their tomorrow.
So guys its been a pleasure take care and bye for now!!
