In our group we have four vehicles, Pete and Dawi in a LandRover Defender, Barry and Peter in a Ford Ranger, all from the Gold Coast. Des and his brother Mark in a Ford Ranger. Des is a long time friend from Invercargill who lives on the Gold Coast, his brother lives in Invercargill and has come over to do the trip with Des.
Sunday the 3rd August we travelled 694 km from Charleville to Deons lookout, it's at an altitude of 177 meters, amazing views 360o. We gathered firewood along the way and were mighty thankful for the warmth of the fire because once the sun goes down its b... cold, the fire was still going in the morning, which was even better. I reckon it was about 2o with a wind chill of minus 10 burr. I guess you can't expect much else when you camp on top of a lookout! (It woould never happen in NZ)
Travelling on the road you can't help wondering about how the farmers make any money, there are cattle and they look in good condition but what they eat I'm not sure as there is not a blade of grass to be seen and water non existent at the moment. There are also not many fences, there will be a grid on the road with presumably a boundary fence running each side.
One of the road signs read "Road subject to flooding next 21 km" it is just so flat that you couldn't imagine it being flooded. Apparently the ground in the centre of Australia is impervious to water so nothing sinks in it just runs along the top and ends up in Lake Eyre.
We have been on the gravel or dirt roads as they call them in Australia for 100k, the one and only good thing about the wind is it blows the dust away quickly.
