Two weeks in Brazil: Carnaval in Salvador and beaches in Itacare
We left santiago after two days. I spent most of the time on the couch with my flue, so I
didn´t see anything of the city, but I have been there several times before and I´m not a
big fan, so it was ok.
We arrived late in Salvador the 18 of febuary. The first thing that hit me was the heat, the humidity and that I did not understand a word of what the people were saying. I had been quite comfertable in a month and a half in spanish speaking countries and was used to not having any problems with the language. After a while we found a taxi that took us to the appartment my friend Torunn had arranged for a bunch of people. We had no idea
where we were going or if there was people there but we got in the taxi and hoped for the
best. The appartment was lokated in the heart of carneval, so although it was the day
before the carnaval was to start, it was difficult to get to the place that was going to
be oure home for a week. We drove through streets filled with lights, fruit drink bars and
happy people drinking skol and dansing.
When we arrived in the appartment the people we were going to live with were having a
party at the roof terase. We were 12 people in the appartment, me and Christine, Torunn,
my friend from arendal (we have played in a band together, traveled around south america
together five years ago and live together an trondheim for more than two years), Aasa,
Ingrid, Torsten, Elin, Lene, Jens, Magnus, Tommy from england and Matti from sweden. so
ten norwegians and two foreighers..
I´m not going to write in detail from the carneval, but it was basically six days of cazy
partying in the streets with loud brasilian music and caipirinhas.
We had a great time but it was exhosting so I was kind of relieved when it was all over.
But it was an exelent party, nothing like the carnaval in rio, much better.
I did not take lots of pictures, because one could not take the camera outside without getting robbed, Matti learned this the hard way, but I did take some pictures from the appartment.
After the carnaval we had a day of rest and then me, Iorunn, Christine, Aase, Torsten and Ingrid
went to Itacare, a small beachtown ten hours south from Slavador.
There we rented a little house and had an exelent time. It was good too get some peace
and quiet after living inside the carnaval for a week, but we also had time for some good
parties an the only bar they had in town.
The beaches were beautifull and the water nice and warm.
I had to leave my shoes behind in Salvador.
They have been with me for five years, they survived the last trip through south america, carneval in rio, several hiking trips in the andes inkludin the inka trail, the Hove festival and lots more, but they had no chance surviving carnaval in Salvador. They were so full of s*** that nothing could possibly save them.
After three nights in itacare me and christine took the nightbus with the belief that oure flight to Buenos Aires was the next evening. On the bus I was going to check something on the tickets and I discovered what I had missed to see all the times I checked the tickets to see at what time oure flight was. I discovered the date of the flight. It was not hte 3rd og march, it was the second. I can not explain the feeling of panic when I realized that we shoud bee at the plain to Buenos Aires when we were sitting on the bus, then hours away from the airport. And the agony of having nobody else to blame but myself was the worset part. I had been looking forwards to going ot Buenos Aires for so long and had no desire to spend anothe day in Brazil. I had an awfull night at the bus with only one thought in my head and that was to find an easy and cheap way to get to Argentina as soon as possible.
We arived early in the morning and started doing research. We were soo far away so anything besides plane would take several days. Luckily we fined some flight tickets and that same afternoon we got on a plane to Buenos Aires.
ITwo weeks in Brazil was nice, but I missed the South American soul that is not present in Brazil the same was as in the other countries. We did not sa much as hear a tune of pan flute music or see the footsteps of a lama.
Capoera and caiperinhas is good stuff, but I´m more of a wine and tango person myself.
So I got my fill with beautifull beaches and fruit drinks and went of to my second home country, Argentina
