Uganda was wonderful!! It is a beautiful, green country which was a great change from the pollution in Nairobi. While we were at the airport on Thursday waiting to fly out we received a text message saying a peace aggreement had been signed by both parties. This was a HUGE surprise considering the state of the talk earlier in the week but a great surprise. Hopefully things will keep heading in the right direction as Kofi Annan has just left and a man from Tanzania will finish up the remaining topics of the peace talks which include the future plans of the country. We flew into Entebbe, Uganda at around 7:00 at night...an much later than originally planned. The tourist shops in the Nairobi airport speak the truth. They all sold stickers that said "no hurry in Africa." After arriving we drove to the capital, Kampala, and spent the night at the Red Chili Inn. It was spicy! That morning we were picked up by the whitewater rafting company, Nile River Explorers. We drove to Jinja and shared a breakfast with the raft guides and savers (the kayakers). We were on the water (or rather IN the water) from about 10:00 to 5:00 pm. It was one of the most intense things I have ever done. Most of the rapids were class 5 with a waterfall thrown into the mix. We ate lunch (pineapple and cookies) on the Nile and had a delicious BBQ feast afterwards to celebrate everyone surviving the day. That night was spent watching the movie that was made from the rapids video clips and comparing who had the most hardcore flips.
Saturday was pretty low key until around 4:00, when my friend Kane and I decided we wanted to Bungee Jump into the Nile. We went to a place called "Nile High Bungee" where there was a tower ontop of a cliff 44 meters above the Nile. A storm was working up so it was pretty windy...I just wanted to jump before it started lightening while we were on top of this metal tower. Once we got to the top we were delighted to find a young snake waiting for us. The Australian dude who was running the show said to wait at the top while he went down to get a stick since the snake was a young one that was very dangerous because it didn't know how much venom to inject yet, so it usually gave a very high dose. Once he got back we couldn't find it again, so we decided to just jump and get the heck off that tower. We both survived and had a fantastic thrill stopping just above the river so that the tips of our heads dunked in. Afterwards we were lowered into a raft that picked us up and brought us to shore. I will try to attach the video of the event, although seeing how long pictures take, I might be at the internet cafe for 12 hours.
