Ok so it's been a while since my last blog. If you're just joining us I'll give you a little recap of what's been going on. I moved to England, had a great time in London, got a great job in Meavy near Plymouth and now I'm the bar manager there. I went to Dublin for St. Patrick's Day which was amazing yet a little hazy. Now it's time to talk about my latest adventure.
I decided to go away for a week before the summer rush started. I decided on Stockholm Sweden, Copenhagen Denmark and Oslo Norway. I sort of got lost along the way and only made it as far as Copenhagen.
I started off on the 27th of May. I have been getting sick of the train so I decided to fly to London. I got a really good deal on a flight and flew from Plymouth to London Gatwick. I had to wait two hours to check in, then another three and a half hours for my flight to Stockholm because the flight was late. When I found out I had to wait another hour and a half to board I did the only logical thing. I went to the pub and had a few pints of cider.
A few pints and three hours later I was in Stockholm. It was pretty late. The flight got in around 2:00 am. The first thing I noticed was that the country looked like it was run by an IKEA dictatorship. I also noticed that the airport was wall to wall hardwood floor. The airport was about the size of the airport in Toronto so thats a lot of wood.
I got an express bus to the city center, found my hostel and crashed for the night. The hostel was pretty good. The only thing is it was full of asian people who couldn't speak a word of english or anyone who was looking to meet people and tour around. It wasn't really a backpackers hostel.
In the morning I got up and walked around the city and saw some of the sites. The thing about Stockholm is that it doesn't really have that many sites. I mean it's a nice city and what not but no one ever really says I want to go to Stockholm to see the....
I walked for about three hours and then found an Irish pub for the afternoon. I talked to the owner and he was an Irishman who married a Swedish chick and decided to stay in Stockholm. The bar was really impressive. It had about 200 different kinds of whisky and a ton of different beers on tap along with the few Swedish beers that they make in Stockholm.
After that I made my way back to the hostel and had a nap. After my nap I cleaned up a bit and then walked around a little more. I eventually found my way back to the Irish pub because they were showing the England vs. USA match. After the match I made my way back to the hostel because I had to fly out early to Copenhagen.
I got to the airport with no problems and boarded my flight. The flight was probably one of the best flights I've ever had. It was a short one hour flight but the sky was so clear you could see for miles. Sweden from above looks like swiss cheese. So many lakes and islands. When I got to the Copenhagen airport I easily found the metro and made my way to Copenhagen Central.
My Hostel was actually quite close to the station and I quickly found it. I checked into the hostel and then decided to do a little site seeing. As I was checking out a map to see what I might want to see a girl from Kazakhstan asked me if I wanted to join her so I said why not. A few minutes later three Polish chicks and an Italian guy. I forget the Kazakhstan girls name so I'll refer to her as Borat's sister. The Polish girls were Aga, Sylvia and Olivia. Aga and Sylvia were sisters and they met Olivia on the plane over. The Italian guy was named PG.
We all decided on going to see Christiana. Christiana is a really cool city within Copenhagen. It's not really a city but the residents of the walled in city block have claimed their territory and the city basically let them. There are no soft drug laws at Christiana. You will just as likely see hash and weed being sold on the street stands as you would hot dogs or burgers.
We grabbed a few burgers and beers and just relaxed on the green. After a few hours we walked back to the hostel through the old town. From my experience most european old towns look the same just different food and different country flag.
After cleaning up we all started drinking. I met three more Canadians while we were drinking. Luis from Montreal, Dave from Vancouver and Alex from Scarborough. For once the Canadians had the numbers. It was nice to be around Canadians again. We went to a club called Woodstock. They were serving free beer which was good because Copenhagen is quite expensive.
The next day I wasn't going to wait for the others to wake up so I wandered around the city myself and saw the Mermaid which wasn't very impressive. When I got back to the hostel later in the day I met another Canadian from Newmarket named Dave. We got along quite well and will catch up once we're both back in Canada. Dave and I decided to go outside and grab some beers. We then grabbed some food and had a bbq in the hostel courtyard. The bbq was set up really well. There was a grill in the middle of a table and you just sat around the table and through your meat on and drank. We were trying to decide which bar to go to but then all decided to go to the store and grab more booze and stay at the hostel.
I was meant to go to Oslo the next day but I was having such a great time hanging out with all the Canadians and the Polish chicks that I decided to stay in Copenhagen instead. It was a great decision I had a blast the next few days.
The next day the Dave's, Alex and I went to Christiana and the Carlsberg brewery. The Carlsberg brewery was awesome. As we were walking through we met some American girls who were studying in Copenhagen. I grabbed the one girls number because they wanted to go out with us that night.
We got back to the hostel and had another bbq. The American girls showed up and we were off to some clubs. The first club we went to was called the Culture Box. We stayed there for a while and then made our way to Vega. Vega was a really cool club. It had a lot of different floors to it and each floor had a different genre. We got back to the hostel around 7:00 and we all crashed.
The next day Ontario Dave, this new Irish guy named Kion otherwise known to us as Paddy, and Danny from Australia wandered around the city and relaxed in a few parks.
That night we bbq'd again because it was cheap and fun. We then went to a local bar and met some Danish guys who took Ontario Dave, Paddy and me to a local bar where we played a traditional dice bar game where the loser buys the next round. It was a cheap night for me because I didn't lose once.
The next day we all exchanged information and were off to wherever we were going. Gladly this wasn't my last trip of the summer. I am going to be going to Czech Republic for a few days before going to meet up with the Polish girl Aga in Poland. She's going to take me around Krakow and all that. Should be a pretty good time.
