Minnesota! Definitely lots of lakes. I found myself thinking about Paul Bunyan, and the myth of babes blue ox footprints making all the lakes. 57 mike ride- I did pretty good without any training to speak of. Tomorrows mileage is in the 70's I think-so I bet I'll be tired-er then.
Pelican rapids seems to be trying hard to acknowledge it's demographic and cultural shifts in recent years. In this little place- they've published 2 books- one a cookbook with stories, and another 1986 to 2006 comparison with twenty-something mini-biographies of local people. A plaque near the "rapids" showed where norwegian, english, swiss, yankee, etc. people settled in the area (there was a marker in the key for polish- but none on his map!)
I didn't run into anyone but white people out in town- except for one perhaps Somali woman at the post office. I am wondering what brings people here. I see a turkey processing plant, and the farms around grow corn and soy. The only other industry in evidence is lake recreation!
Maybe I'll find out more tomorrow.
